Default Galway - where to stay, what to fish for?

Looks like the family are heading to Ireland this summer. My wife is keen on somewhere round Galway and we’ll be visiting her Aunt in Tuam (where a nice stretch of the Claire runs through their farm)

I know there is loads of trout and salmon fishing but I’m wondering what the SWFF is like? I'd quite like to give this a bash as I don’t get much opportunity in Perthshire. Maybe even a bit of coarse fish of the fly. I’d be quite happy to employ a guide to show me the ropes for a day…

We’ll be looking for self catering so if any one knows a handy cottage that sleeps 4 and is close to some fishing near Galway (I don’t drive, so within cycling range is best) then please feel free to suggest somewhere.

Norm

Hi Norm. As regards bass the general rule of thumb is that the best fishing would be south of an imaginery line drawn from Galway to Dublin and in particular along the south coast. However the Clare river is an exceptional fishery with great hatches and an amazing late summer run of lake trout(it is the most significant nursery on the east shore of Corrib) some of which weigh ten or more pounds fishing is strictly policed by the local clubs and a very strong catch and release policy pervades this river can offer outstanding sport under the right conditions late August early September. you should all have a great time, and would hope you will fish the clare stretch of your relatives. dont think you would need a guide for this river as try the local pub for info, you must visit there too (galway) and if you enjoy sea food there used to be a lovely resturant on the quay side near the river outlet. and dont forget the irish music and a few pints of hope you all enjoy
