Default Lough Currane/Waterville June 2011

As usual this time of year my thoughts are turning to next year's fishing trips. Myself and a pal are going to go to Waterville for 5/6 days at the end of June next year, basically the plan would be a couple of days fishing lough Currane and a couple of days bass fishing. Couple of questions:
Any particular boatmen recommended?
Would a couple of sea trout (and Currane) novices be ok renting a boat on their own after a day with a boatman or would you be better off getting 2 days?
What's the bass fishing like around Waterville?

Ta

Bob Preistly is just a superb guy to share a day with on the lough .

if weather looks windy would go for at least 2 days with a ghillie its big and rocky ,and can be FFFFF scary .

Cant help with the bas but find some rocks and the pollack fishing is fun when ther is no wind to make the lough fun .

Enjoy it is a wonderful place !

Hi,
Currane actually has its own website(you probably already know). There is a list of ghillies on there. They are all good fellas with a lot of local experience between them & they care passionately about Currane.I use John Murphy, he used to be the fishery manager until last year but still ghillies I understand.Im hoping to get there in April when the big fells starting making a show.My best was a 11.5lber in April 2006 with John on his boat.If im not mistaken & I stand to be corrected it still is the biggest caught on fly at Currane albeit there has been 3 possibly 4 bigger ones on the troll.
The last thread is correct Currane can be a wild place when the wind gets up & I would definately hire a ghillie with a boat for at least the first two days as there are some dangerous submerged rocks that can catch you out at different water heights.
Waterville itself is a nice little place with plenty accomodation & bars + the obligatory tackle shop now owned by Kevin Brain I believe. Its here you get your permit etc to fish.
Bass wise there are plenty hotspots & Kevin at the shop is just your man for info on that(he has his own website).
I usually fly to Cork then its a 1 3/4 hr drive to Waterville.Look at your map & take the route along the coast NOT to Killarney.Honest its breathtaking & I still cant help stopping off every now & again to look at marks to fish in the future. Cahrdaniel near Waterville is lovely! Sorry just noticed your from Cork doh!! Theres loads of bass fishing near you my man!
Enjoy it & pm me if you want to know anything else.

Another thumbs up for Waterville.
On the sea trout front I would suggest Frankie Donnelly and his dedicated lakeside B&B, with boat house.

Kevin is good for bait too, as well as guiding for bass. If he is too busy, give John Quinlan a ring. No better bass guide in the area. He specialises in lure and fly fishing for bass and pollack (but you don't need a guide for pollack - deep water off any rock!)

Thanks lads
great info, we're planning on renting a house in the village for the week so maybe 2 days ghillied on the lake a day or two on our own and a few days bass fishing.

Me & a pal rented a self catering "bungalow" just outside Waterville twice in 2007 I remember.Nothing special but cheap & it gave us the chance to taste our catch. My god Ive never tasted sea trout so good!!B & B wise there are some good ones to be had really good rates.

Fishing wise at Cahrdaniel you get on the rocks high up on one side to hit deep water(& see some huge pollack & bass mulling around) then there is the other side of the tidal basin which is a sandy beach & you look at your feet to a steep slope of sand with fast running water into the basin.I kid you not Ive seen huge fish at my feet well into double figures.

Just remembered a place in the county of Cork I got advised to check out for bass.Rosscarberry, unfortunately for me when I was there the weather was terrible.Fishing impossible! That said I could see what my contact had been getting at.A nice tidal basin with some interesting features for multi species.

Yep, get a ghillie for the first couple of days until you get your bearings. The eastern end of the lake can be pretty hairy especially in a big wave or when the light starts to fade. Oh.. or when the weather changes.

I remember one day vividly. It seemed a half decent day quite pleasant infact.John say's oh look whats happening to the water over there(black rocks if I remember right). The water started turning lumpy/"squally" & I swear a bloody vortex/twister started lifting from the water.Amazing to see but alarming as these things could easily flip a boat in no time.Still a great place

Flies for seatrout on Currane: Bibio, green peter, green peter muddler, kate mclaren, delphi shrimp, claret bumble, jungle bunny (standard loch/lough flies really) size 12-10 maybe a size 8 on the bob in a big wind, but the size also depends on the height of the lough...
