As quoted many years ago by the local sage, Ifans y Tryc:

"Cricieth by the sea or Criccieth by the 2 cīs"

- the first one is considered to be Welsh, the second one is considered to be the anglicized version (there are no words in Welsh with two consecutive cīs). To my knowledge, nobody really knows the correct spelling. The debate rages on.....

I should point out that Gwynedd has only one letter 'n' whether Welsh or anglicized.

Gruffudd ap Llywelyn was imprisoned in the 'castle of Cruceith' (Middle Welsh orthography Kastell Krukeith. The earliest written reference, in a 14th century poem. Thought to come from 'Crug Caeth'; as caeth could mean 'prisoner' the name would mean prisoner's rock.

Llwyngwril is in the old county of Meirionydd and is a fair journey from the south Carnarvonshire town of Criccieth.

Hawker may I suggest some winter boat fishing in the seas off Aberdyfi instead?

Obviously the AA have never been stuck in the Saturday queue over the cob to Portmadoc as I have.

A shorter, at 29.4 miles, trip would be the 46 min journey (I do it in under 1/2 hr as it's a really fast road), to Bala, Gwynedd where Bala and District assoc tickets can be purchased for the superb upper Dee grayling fishing.
