Default Trout in Portugal

Hi

I'm trying to gather as much info as possible about fly fishing for trout in Portugal. I'm thinking of visiting Porto in March 2011 and I have heard that there are a few good rivers about 100km inland, near Coimbra - the Ceira, Alva and Mondego (the rivers on which the World Fly Fishing Championships were hosted in 2006).

I'm likely to only have one day for fishing so would be interested in a recommendation for a particular river and beat to fish from anyone who has been. Smaller, more remote streams will do me nicely if possible. Any advice on getting there, nearest town to base myself in/places to stay, obtaining permits, equipment and flies to use, and what the fishing is like in March, would be a bonus.

I've e-mailed 2 guide co's I found on the web - Sun Fly Fishing and Portugal Fishing Adventure but haven't had any replies. Hopefully get some advice on here!

Might be worth doing a search on this forum, I seem to remember a lad posting from Portugal in the past with some nice photos.

Thanks SB. I think this might be the link you are thinking of:

Portugal Rivers

(Coincidentally where I got my info from!) The Ceira looks good - wild and intimate looking.

I see from the link below that one of our forumites, John Tyzack actually fished all 3 rivers in the 2006 WFFC and it looks as though, whilst he didn't have much joy in the comp overall, he rated the Alva as the best:

Just a quick update for anyone who might be interested in visiting Portugal with a fly rod one day. I found the following helpful link on this site after a bit more research:

Flyfishing the mountain streams of Portugal

Seems Gois is the place to go, to fish the upper Ceira River. Will definitely try and get there in the new year.

In the meantime, if anyone has any further info, do get in touch.

Cheers.

Hello there:
I live in Coimbra and so far I have only fly-fished saltwater but an early New Year Resolution for 2011 is to go after some trout. I built myself a 7 1/2 foot #3 fiberglass rod and am itching to try it out on some streams. I would be happy to plan a day´s fishing with you in March - Gois is not too far from Coimbra and there are also some other rivers in the Serra da Estrela region. Here is another link to the Portuguese trout and seatrout fishing:

Cheers,
John
