The Final came to the Dee for the first time, courtesy of the Maelor and Llangollen clubs who very kindly made their superb waters available for this prestigious event.
The Dee, like many other rivers, has suffered months of mainly low water. The competition was fished in very low, but stable water conditions as the Environment Agency had agreed to temporarily suspend water release to assist in showing the Dee to best advantage.
Many competitors found the fishing difficult in practice, bu the water conditions and warmer settled weather turned the grayling on to the dry fly. Over the two match-days many fish were taken on nymphing tactics, but the dry fly certainly reigned supreme.
Over two days the 4 beats in use produced no less than 277 trout and grayling of 20cm or more to the 32 competitors all of which were safely returned to the water. Many grayling in excess of 40cm were caught, and the largest fish were 3 superb fish of 43.1 cm.
Organiser Martin Dixon thanked the anglers for the superb spirit at the event, the Hand Hotel for being the perfect HQ, the EA and especially the two clubs who made the event a success.
The England Final will return to the Dee again in August 2011 interested in taking part should contact Martin Dixon at
