Default Greys National Bank/ Stonebridge IND 8-8-11

This heat was a full house and the lads in the car park were full of themselves saying how easy it was on practice the day prior to the comp and big bags were going to be required to get into the top 3 .
weather was spot on with a brisk N/Westerly wind expectations were very high we kicked off at 9.30 the 1st fish was netted at 9.31 followed by another at 9.34 with a double hook up at 9.37 but unfortunately the fish on the point came off as it was about to slide over the net the angler in question was former manager Fred Bainbridge he got off to a flyer with the Captain Martin Introna on the next peg landing a fish as well at 9.44 ,a number of fish were dropped at the net on this session which would turn out to be very costly towards the end of the match ,the second session saw barry Hutchinson have a good spell on a size 16 black spider tied very sparse he too landed 3 fish off his second peg.with a noticable Mr Introna having some vicious takes fishing a gold blood worm then switching to a black minkie but not one of them sticking ,but he did manage to land another fish early in the afternoon session but that was it for the rest of the day .
Fishing became harder as the day went on with an average of 6 fish per session being landed ,not as easy as the anglers thought at dinner time barry was to take the lead with 4 fish .
After the break there was a spate of anglers landing fish in quick succession and it was also noticable that Colin Harris found a method working to his liking as he landed 2 fish in 2 casts but unfortunately colin was also to be broken twice on the same peg and it was the same old story for him the rest of the comp with him dropping at least 3 fish at the net,we did have an amusing 10 minute spell where Fred was out of sight of Martin being beyond a bush and he was thrashing his rod tip in the water and saying to Fred thats another one get in there how many you on now then Fred with him replying still just the 3 Martin .
This was turning it into a very tight match going into the last session of the afternoon as we had 2 anglers on 4 fish and 7 anglers on 2 fish however it proved to be a very rewarding session for Dean Appleby with him hooking into 5 fish and managing to land 3 with Fred also netting 3 fish on his last peg fishing a size 18 dry fly fish at distance i may add but to his demise 2 of the fish were chub .
This match was fished in great spirit as they all should be with everyone having a good chin wag after the match, the results as follows

1st FRED BAINBRIDGE 5 fish 9.31

2nd DEAN APPLEBY 5 fish 11.44

3rd BARRY HUTCHINSON 4 fish

congratulations to all qualifiers good luck in the final

jim

I got a message from 'Golden balls' asking me to play with him at Stonepuddle.... I accepted ... I thought is was a duck pond not an 18acre fishery as I was led to believe... about 1 acre of water greeted us... it was like knitting a jumper what with lines crossing eachother from opposite banks.. .. Nevertheless, a fun day Fred showed me his prowess on fishing these types of waters and worked hard for his fish on some good pegs which was important on the day... still, you had to catch on them... I struggled... a deserved win by Alf... I'll fish the next un on Toft... a 'proper' water of 40 acres
