Default How do pro's get fish in the boat so quickly?

Hi, does anyone know how the profesionals get fish in the boat so quickly? Iain Barr recons he normally gets most of his fish fish in the boat within 10 seconds (page 43, march (mabe feb) trout fisherman), how do they do it? Is it just hook and hold or is there a special technique? Any ideas would be helpfull. Thanks.

The use of 7/8 weight rods help along with heavy nylon. Also, once a fish is first hooked it can be bullied straight into the net within seconds. The fish can be in the net before it realises what's happening!

Comp anglers who come across fish don't want to waste time playing fish. They have time bonuses to gain.

In rivers there are a couple of techniques to land fish quicker especially grayling.

For pleasure anglers though I see no benefit in any of the above.

Thankyou very much for your help, much appreciated. I totally agree that it has no role in pleasure fishing and matches I fish are freindly local club ones and so dont intend to do it myself because I love the fight too much. I would like to give it a go, to add anther string to my bow and I also plan to fish some open matches next year and it might be a handy technique to have when drifting over a pod of stockiies. Thanks again for your help.

I dunno...
I play fish pretty hard when going c&r for pleasure.
Maybe not anything like as brutal as 10 seconds, but they're frequently released in around a minute or so from being hooked.

Fished with Curly in the AW final last Oct on Rutland he hooked and then dragged a 4lb fish to the boat in seconds! while doing this he kept telling himself the longer its on the more chance it has of coming off! 12lb nylon and pull! Good angler who knows all about Rutland but its not for me

Dragging 4lb fish into the boat in seconds?

Under normal circumstances? Aye dream on.

I've seen skerrets played badly rip through 12lb fluoro, never mind grown on power houses.

Give a fish what it needs and take back what it gives.

Then you will get it in the net.

The Pirate.

This is true I've fished with Iain a number of times and the fish don't know what's hit them Its literally hook and pull as quick as you can, the idea being that you'll catch more than you will lose.

There is the odd occasion when this can be done... not always.. and I have fished with Iain a couple of times .... Fact is, the fish hasn't a clue what is happening... this is the time to drag it to the net before it 'wakes-up'... you do need bottle to do it and, you dont need heavy leaders to do it... give em their head and you will possibly be playing em for ages as Pirate has implied... Shippo taught me to "let em fight in the boat Martin"... ask Iain who introduced 'him' into getting em in quick...... ...

I fished with one of the red bull lads in the Anglian water final last year. I got a fish and played it for over a minute. When I got it to the net i realised it had put my cast in a bit of a tangle.

As i sorted out the tangle (took less than 2 minutes) my partner had 3 fish in the boat in about three casts. I never seen the likes in all my life. I was shocked. Each fish took less than 7 seconds to get into the boat.

We were obviously over a pod of fish, but it was the way they were taking the flies on the roly poly. They literally just swam into the net after they were hooked. As if they were on a remote control.

My partner explained that they were swimming in the same direction as the flies and once hooked they just keep swimming in that direction. Its when they change direction and put on pressure that they take a bit longer to land

Mackerel fishing, Stockie bashing, not angling IMHO but all the top competition anglers relish in it.
