Default Whats wrong with Chew?

Rumours are circulating that all is not well.... fishing is dire and Pike are decimating stocks.... Also, word going around that the English National may be switched to another venue?? .. The fishery report does not echo this..

Chew Valley
591 fish taken by 136 rods, average 4.4 per rod. A much better result this week. Fish have started to be seen and caught from a few areas other than Walley. Boats have been catching well from Herons Green Bay mainly close against the weed beds. Here corixae feeders give a chance of fish in any conditions. From the Dam to the sailing club has still been popular though when the fish are moving the catching area has extended as far as Woodford Bank and the mouth of Villice Bay. The bank anglers have been concentrating at Walley Bank too but again some better bags have been taken from Wick Green early morning. Most fish seem to be taking dark buzzer and Diawl Bach though a small green damselfly is still worth a go off Walley. Dries have been a good bet if there are fish showing or late evening. The water quality at Chew has been fantastic for June but the brighter conditions will increase the chance of algae.

This may help to dispel any rumours, CEFF Confederation of English Fly Fishers I fished Chew last week and it had been stocked the week before with 5,000 fish so the reports should be a lot better. I also fished Chew in the major clubs last year where 80 anglers caught 20 odd fish.

I have not qualified for the national but don't relish the thought of fishing at Chew one bit if I do.

Funny time of year Martin ?? I know its an incredible pike fishery with an amazing head of big fish but maybe there is something up that needs looked at. To be fair there is probably one too many pike in there as every numpty in the land seems to be catching big pike down there but other pressure from many of the well known resident stockie bashers on there is maybe taking its toll. Its a phenomenal venue with superb feeding but if the fishing is so dire then somethings wrong.

Id bet they made so much revenue from piking last year and this that the last thing they will do is remove the pike.

I've never heard a good word about the place and at the Lexus final last year it was very poor. In fact IMO if the CEEF continue as planned to fish the national at Chew then they will be in danger of turning the National into lottery! They should switch to Grafham now!

The Confederation of English Fly Fishers

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Contrary to rumour the Loch style National is being held on Chew.

It is understood that many anglers have heard rumours that it is to be otherwise.

At this time the fishery is taking bookings for practice boats.

There have been problems at the fishery which are being monitored by the water authority and management. Should this affect the ability of the venue to hold a fair final then the Confederation will be informed in good time.

There are contingencies in place should the situation change. Anglers will be informed with ample time to arrange accommodation and practice at the alternative venue which will be Grafham.

John Mees who is organising the event is in communication with Bob Handford at the fishery.

It is an unfortunate sign of the times that fisheries are experiencing these problems. The Confederation must support the fisheries but also the anglers to ensure that we have a fair competition.

Baz Reece

Chairman

Rest assured guys we will make sure that all is well with the fishing.
I fished a qualifier there and it was rock hard. Nothing wrong with the water and there were fish to be had. It was testing fishing.
If it's like that for the final then it will be a competition and not a race.

Yep, I don't mind.

It certainly gave us a fair match the last 2 times it hosted the National.

September is a long way off and there's plenty of time for the fishing to pick up. Also, if it needs to be switched to Grafham at short notice then John Mees is the man who can do it.

There's probably a few people with more than 3 caps who would relish the captaincy...

Me neither - I spoke to John H yesterday whilst he was on chew, around lunchtime - they had had half a dozen in the boat by then - so the fish are there and can be caught. Of course it can be hard (i've been on there enough times in the english team final on the lexus in mid summer and struggled along and had to work very hard for a few fish) - but ultimately the matches produced fair results with a good spread from the top rods downwards - hard fishing, yes but a good contest - would a blob race be a more desirable way of sorting a National out???? not for my money.
