I would like to hear from organisers of the big competitions about what they think about what has been said in this thread?

Hi,

The scoring system in this years Airflo final WILL be changed. We have been looking at this for some time now. At the moment i am involved in talks with the former secetary, when we have agreed the new system we will announce it publicly.

Regard's,
Fred.

It sounds to me like the rules are determined by the individual fishery. Perhaps you should think of standardising the rules accross the board, that way, everyone can get to understand them, and there can be no grey areas.

There is no chance of all fisheries ever having the same rules, because always sat the rules to suit there own anglers, and care about the sport of competition flyfishing are the visiting ANGLERS in there heats of any comp.

Agree with Stan although think best result in a comp is a rod average of 2 to 3. There will be some blanks but a reasonable chance of catching fish and the better anglers will have decent baskets. Also helps even out fish just under the measure. Agree there will usually be some luck involved. Larger can sometimes be targeted either by tactics or area but still just a better chance of them rather than targetting individual fish.
The 'limit bag' attitude contributes to the behaviour problem, especially where there is a shoal of stockies.
Whilst I do not agree with big fish kills of wild fish, I do not think there is a sustainability problem on Leven. Year on year there seems to be more fish all over the Loch and the number taken by anglers is reducing year on year. Care of the burns much more critical than anything the anglers do. Disagree that club competions are an issue, my club had 12 fish on monday night, 11 of which were returned. I know at least one other local club who have a voluntary catch and release policy on leven.

I would tend to agree, with a proviso. On lochs/loughs which have a reputation for reponding well to dry fly (and Conn is one), dry fly will almost always select out bigger than average fish. The same can be said for buzzer fishing, but to a lesser extent.

My two best fish for the week ere both caught on dries.
