Default Corrib-Commercial Anglers Comp

After weaning myself off fishing over the winter, I am thinking of fishing this comp as my first day out for 2010.

Can anyone tell me who I should contact and when it is on?

Looking forward to seeing a different part of the Corrib....Markers 49-50

Thanks a million,

JB

49-50 Commercial water.....LOL , you wont win it there thats for sure.
With any luck the big freeze will continue long enough to save all the skinny fish from the pot hunters.

Never fished it before and with 3 lb of fish winning it last year anglers are hardly fishing it to fill the freezer. I throw back every fish that I catch apart from the odd time that I am lucky enough to catch one in a comp.

I see no difference in catching a trout in March, or in April or May or June or July or in August during the World Cup or in September or in an end of season comp on Sheelin in October, you know what I mean do you not????????????????????? Or are Mask and Sheelin trout different

Hey JB there was no dig intended at you and I know your no pot hunter.
What gets me is there's very little of whats generated by some of the comps goes back into the lough, and no its not just Corrib trout that I think should be protected. I think all wild trout comps should be c&r and that killing wild trout for bragging rights is just stupid. The World Cup and the Shellin comps should also be c&r and I would be only to happy to see them go that way. There's way to much money involved in Irish comps, boats for prizes etc and I do wonder how much of the money generated goes back to help the lough on which they are held. I know the Shellin comp puts alot of the money back into Shellin but I would love to see the figures for some of the others. You know well I like the comp scene and its a great social event where you meet some great people but I honestly think in this day and age killing wild trout for comps is just madness.
Oh and one other thing. As you said, it was won with only 3lb of fish last year, did you ever wonder why there were so little fish caught.... food for thought....

I agree Trout Hunter, comps are all or should be all about the social aspect of the sport. In that regard, its great to see more catch and release coming in to the comp scene.

I believe that most clubs are willing to invest in stream development, but we have a crazy situation on Lough Conn where the River Deel, the main spawning stream can not be touched as it holds some Freshwater Pearl Mussels . These are protected and you cannot even put a toe onto the river bed never mind carry out some stream development. The really crazy thing is that there are no Freshwater Pearl Mussels left that are young enough to breed, so the powers that be want so protect a dying species on a river and in so doing they are giving a good shot at killing off a few other species in the process.

Looking forward to meeting up over the year and lets hope that all anglers employ a catch and release policy

Ah JB, I see we are singing of the same hymn sheet. I'm glad you agree that most of the comps should be c&r and with all the modern technology available its long over due that anglers found a fool proof way of running c&r comps. I have to agree with you that I hope all the anglers coming to the west adopt a c&r policy and realize just how precious a resource our wild trout are. I can sympathize with you about your river on Conn, some of the fisheries decisions would make you scratch you head. This whole thing of hatcheries being the work of the devil just baffles me.It has been proven the world over that they work and yet we cant operate them here. I honestly think the loughs fished much better when the were in place a few years back. We have a perfectly good hatchery wasting away in Headford and we are told we cant operate it because hatcheries mess with the genetic make up of the fish, yet across the other side of Corrib a hatchery is working away. The fisheries dump tones of stockies into Shellin each year,is that not messing with the genetic make up of those fish... We are led to believe that the fish should be left to their own devices in the streams, but if we go to work on the streams were told not to. Last year I put photos of spawning Corrib fish on here for people to see. A Few months later I saw six cattle walking up and down the very stream where these fish spawned. To date there is still no fence erected along this river. These are the things I think are most important to wild trout fishing and some times I just wish all the hard work that goes into running comps was directed towards the well being of our wild trout.
Now rant over, I have to have a rant every now and again ( its been a long winter ) to let of steam and I guess this is a subject for another day. If the weather stays the way it is we might be lucky to be fishing by the end of March, lough was frozen around the edges this morning again.

Hi JB, I have to agree with you it's a crazy situation on the River Deel. Lough Conn and Cullin Anglers use to help finance stream development on the river Deel and its tributaries but the Dept of National Parks and Wildlife put a stop to this because Freshwater Pearl Mussels are a protected species. The river Deel is only open for 3 months (june-august) and what anglers may not know is that you are not allowed to wade the river (try telling this to a cow). Salmon ,brown trout and sea trout use the Deel to spawn and where fresh gravel was put the down the redd count went up, simple as that. It even gets better.........one time in very low water conditions N.W.F.B. staff were moving white clawed crayfish to deeper water when they were stoped by the Dept of National Parks and Wildlife , these to are protected and you can't touch them........ nobody told the gulls they had some feast
