Default Single Blob Method

Hi,

Read an article where John Sutton and Peter Appleby qualified at Stocks for the Scierra Pairs Comp.

During the Scierra Pairs Comp final they used a "single blob method" that has left the rest of the fly angling world playing catch up.

Can anyone give any details about this method?

Thanks for looking.

Speak for yourself. Some of the UK comp regulars maybe. "The rest of the fly angling world" I don't think so.

It's simple : tie a blob on a 15-20ft leader and fsh it

What is interesting is that Peter and other have found you can catch like this when two blobs ten foot apart does not seem as successful, the theory being that heavily "blobbed" rainbows shy away when they see two or more together in clear water.

Fred B s the man on this forum to ask.

That sounds awfully complicated Charlie, is there a special way of tying it on

Can be a deadly method on its day like any othr method used the right way in the right circumstances. A single fly can work, especially one that is dark in colour as it doesnt spook the trout.

To say that it left the "rest of the fly angling world" playing catch up" is a load of keek in my opinion. They had a successful day fishing a successful method, simple.

Where did you read this?????? No doubt some magazine, that uses stupid comments like that in a vein effort to sell more of their rubbish magazines.

Stick to this forum instead of the mags mate. Youll learn a lot more.

Dont beleive everything you read mate. I heard of a recent magazine describing a competition anglers as a "fish catching machine". My god how sad . Who writes this stuff. And I thought Sky News were guilty of sensationalising things

Happy St Paddy's Day

Default Single Blob Method

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

Got the info off the Stocks Website - http://www.stocksreservoir.com/galleries/halloffame.php

I asked Ben Dobson, who says Peter and John Sutton are keeping the "Method" under wraps and Ben does not know but has a couple of ideas but nothing concrete.

It appears "this single blob method" involves more that a single blob on a 20ft leader?

PS - I only quoted the wording from the Stocks Website. Quote "They used a single blob method that has left the rest of the fly angling world playing catch up".

Thanks for looking.

Default Single Blob Method.

OOOW dare i enter this ??????
Why not.

O.K., i'll give my opinion based upon my knowledge regarding the title " single blob method ". I'll also state before i go on that i make no reference to who designed the method as it is a well known fact that many anglers have found success fishing single flies but what's happened here is that some anglers have had some very good results hence thats why some are talking about it, so for that reason as it's been invited to the forum i will share my knowlege for those who are interested.

Firstly, the basic rig in this particular method.
Line: The most popular line which best suits this method is the Grey's med. sinker. { grey in colour} 2ips.
Leader. A 4ft section of 16lb copol. is attached to the fly line via nail knot, no braided loop. then attach a 22ft leader of 5lb fulling mill via water knot for comps. or leader ring for non comps.
Fly : Dark sunburst blob.

Results.
Sciera Pairs final.
Top rods on Rutland.
Top rods on Stocks.
Top rods on the lake.

The method can come into it's own when fishing over pressured fish and excells on days of heavy boat pressure, although if fish have been pushed deep a di line may be more effective.

Another statistic that has be showing is that " in the above conditions " the difference between boat partners bags can be significant, i.e. on more than one occasion 8 fish limits have been reached by the user before the partner has even caught one, these are true facts not fiction.

Fred.

Stillwater is pretty spot on.

I have no secrets, especially other peoples, but I may just mention I was top individual day two in the lexus team final at Rutland about 5 years ago fishing a single blob in Barnsdale.
Jason Watkins had 3 fish on a single blob in the last 15 minutes of day one, so I decided to go single blob 20ft leader if i was struggling. I was so I did. Cheers Jason.
Bagged up in an hour whilst my boat partner, a very good Scottish international had 3 fish but a zillion follows on a multi fly set up. By the time he changed the fish had switched off and even a single blob wouldn't work.

Everyone to their own, but I believe the "official secret" single blob method involves "holding/hanging" the blob after the retrieve at maximum leader range about 20 odd feet from the boat, using 14+ feet of 16lb+ nylon with the last section to the fly being fluro.
The thicker nylon gives you some control at range.

In Canada, you are only allowed to use a single fly and fishing out there has given me a lot of confidence fishing a single fly on a long leader. A single size 12 DB or damsel on an 18ft leader is one of my regular approaches when I'm having a hard day.

"Secret single blob method"

I love this sport! So much ballsh1t..
