I would hazard a guess that blobs would be high on the agenda.

fishing is not about bagging up, just get out on that boat at Rut land and enjoy the scenery and bird life,
Did you see Billy Connolly last night fishing a well known salmon river in Canada, he caught zilch but was clearing enjoying himself,
I went out for the first time yesterday to a loch where i usually go on to C&R,
but the Fish were not playing ball, and i only caught one,
But i really enjoyed it, and to see the skeins of Geese going over made my day.

LOL Outstanding I like the cut of your jib Try a Hi-D or a DI5 Sweep with a 10' leader and a cats whisker booby you won't go far wrong.

Default Bagging on Rutland { early season }

Hi the cat
Disregarding the stupid fresh stokies,
I think the most important point is finding the feeding depth mate, for me it would definatly be either a di-7 or a di-5 early season.
Try to find areas close enough to the banks with some good depth, around 15-20ft will be good starting point. I've often found a count to 15-17 followed by steady but sharp long draws does well, also sometimes fish will become wise to early season pullers wizing the flies past them so thats why i tend to slow things a bit, let the fish have time to follow the flies { because they will } and then try hanging deep, i favour either a olive and black double or a double cat on the point, with a skinny size 10 red holo. type nymph in the middle then the old blob on the top dropper, as i said earlier the fish will follow right to the end and if you hang properly you'll be surprised just how many will take the nymph or the double on the point in the comfort and saftey zone hidden deep say around 12ft.
Fred.

Default Bagging up quickly

Yes cat it can be done but like someone said before, it's not all about catching fish.
I run a match every year called the Alan West Memorial Trophy which is always fished on the first friday in April, the year before last I took my 22 year old son for his second ever day fly fishing. I took him down the Normanton bank armed with a Di 5 and single orange blob and showed him how to go on. I had my limit by lunchtime and sat back and watched him for a while when suddenly all clicked into place. The cast was short but soft, the retrieve was as I'd advised a slow long draw, the fish took and the look on his face was worth a dozen Rutland limits. He went on to catch his limit (with a little more help) and from then on never shuts up about it. He's going again this year.

I'm looking forward to it already Andy and opening day is on the Wednesday before so it should be a good day on the Friday.

Di5 line with Orange blob on the top dropper and a cat boobie on the point for me, straight over to stockie bay and work my way round to normanton
