Default First Comp

Also have a look at www.ceff.org.uk as there are details of National Competitions there.

As a starter I would suggest the Airflo Classic which is a friendly Bank Competition and there should be a heat next year near you. You don't say where you are based as there could be a good club near you wehere there will be anglers only too willing to help.

Urbanflyman and Horses 50.

The Alan West Memorial Trophy is a very very friendly comp which has grown over the years from 6 friends fishing to 70ish last year. Some of the people that fish have never caught a thing but return every year because they love the day that much. There is no time bonus so everyone has the chance to win or get a place, you also fish with who you want so you are under no pressure to do well. Some of us even go out the day before and tell everyone the following day where we found fish if we did!!!!! Please feel free to pm me for more info is required.
We'll have over £1000 worth of prizes so what do you have to lose?
Andy

Horses, dont worry about it,competitions should be fun and there to be enjoyed, some do take them serious but as you say you are new to comps, start off and just enjoy the taking part ,it doesnt matter how good or bad you are as long as you enjoy yourself and fish the way you normally would and dont get in a panic changing flies every 2 seconds. It wont take you long to get to know what they are about and all the info you need on each comp is available before them so you can prepare.Everyone has been in the same boat so i hope you enjoy them as you will broaden your skill and meet plenty of new friends, even though some are a bit like MI5 when it comes to comps.but make it fun and dont get all wound up about them just enjoy the outing.

Good words above. The first few comps are a little nerve wracking, but I've learned more from competitions and other competitors than from a lifetime of reading fishing books and magazines. I fished my 1st comp with 2 fly lines - floater and kelly, I didn't have a boat seat and wore a barbour jacket with £6milletts waterproof trousers. I was uncomfortable because I couldn't stand up in the boat as I used to and got drenched through. I was with a chap called Peter Johnson, a fine Bewl angler and sadly now lost to a fatal disease commonly known as golf! He gave me flies and encouraged me through out and I had a great day. I've met many fine anglers and fine people, unfortunately all very ugly, but very often an absolute delight to share a boat with for 8 hours. I now truck up at Rutland, Grafham and Chew etc and always see familiar faces and have made many good friends and many aquantances that are only as a result of fishing competitions. My first comp, i stood on the outside of the group, feeling a bit of an outsider and very nervous. Every one else seemed to know each other and know what they were doing. There was another chap looking equally out of place - Clive Collier, we got chatting, it was his first comp also and Clive has been a great friend for many years now. Clive has now fished for england many times thanks to my encouraging words that day!? Many non anglers think fly fishing is a solitary sport. I can assure you Sir, competitive fly fishing is anything but. Start fishing competitions, join a club and fish their local comps, eventually join a team and fish the bigger comps; and if you don't end up taking it too seriously and losing your head up your bum and forget why you started in the 1st place, you'll never regret your first competition.

Hi Horse

Don't worry about making a donkey of yourself ...... there are pleanty of us who can beat you at that everytime.

If you and your son want to have some fun please read my thread under the competitions section (Interested in competitions in the South?).

You don't say exactly where you are but if we can get enough people together to warrant a bash, we will.

Afterall, we only need two anglers to make a match (and the good thing about that is your guaranteed a second place finish).

Drop me a line and we'll get our geographies sorted out.

Gav
