boobies is on a distinguished road
Default Boyant flies in comps

what with the introduction of catch and release in our comps - where do we stand with buoyant flies. boobies are banned but then you can use what is effectively a single eyed booby. whats the difference?

i gillied in the ladies intenational on the lake of menteith. i think that the fish released on the single eyed booby were hooked deeper than the ones despatched before the 4 fish limit was taken.....

i can not remember the last time i - or my boat partners fished boobies slow on a di-7 or di-8. they are usually pulled and probably 90% of fish are hooked in the mouth or tongue and seldom in the throat.

i think that more fish swallow blobs than boobies!

I wondered about that,I noted that small deerhair type bouyant point flies were being used after the no booby/C&R section of the comp came into play.should this be legal, what about having a no hook booby on the point to keep the flies in the taking zone.(or must all flies be capable of catching a fish)

Deerhair is ok Jim as its "naturally Buoyant" rather than artificially buoyant.

Hi Jim, I think this would then go down the bung route as far as comps are concerned. Some folk may remember an interview with last years brown bowl winner at the spring international who changed to a booby with small enough eyes that it sank (albeit very slowly) and he was allowed to use it. Its either a booby or its not, it shouldnt be left this open to interpritation. you could also use a floating fry type dressing on the point to maintain the washing line or a heavily dressed/ginked deer hair sedge which would give disturbance and bouancy as a booby would. I have probably had more deep hooked fish using a blob with a slow retrieve than with a booby.

Wullie,This was being used as a pulling fly. not a bung.

OK Jim, but it would then still leave rules open to interpritation, how fast do you have to retrieve to be pulling before it does become a 'bung'. Not trying to start a debate Jim, just that so many rules are left open to interpritation by the anglers and officials that it is getting blurry between bending and breaking rules. As you will know at comp briefings the same questions come up time and time again with different answers from the officials. If they are interpriting rules differently, what chance do 2 anglers out on the water have.
