Default England Qualifying Process

An Alternative England Lochstyle Qualifying Process.

All regions must hold a two day qualifier, consecutive days or separated days it doesn’t matter. This prevents a lucky result getting you through to a national final as you have to perform on both days.

Multiple entries are allowed. This will raise the bar at every regional qualifier as more of the better anglers will turn up to venues that are not their local water. A match fished over two days will prevent anyone from ‘buying’ their way to the final as they will still have to beat a strong field over two days. The biggest benefit to multiple entries is that anglers will fish a wider variety of waters and hence improve their all round fishing skills.

Fish a two day National final. The cream will rise to the top over two days.

I strongly believe that this system would produce consistently strong England teams. I also believe that a robust qualifying process would prevent the need to reintroduce roll-overs.

A similar process should be employed for the River National, however, multiple sessions on different water can be fished on the same day for a regional qualifier making a two day regional qualifier unnecessary.

Our current system is flawed and must be changed if England are to consistently win home internationals. I am aware of the forum members who will see this post and I hope that it provokes constructive debate.

Regards,

Andy

Just incase you forgot Andy - there's a Bank International also .

One big problem we in England have, imo is, pre-match stocking !.......which anyone can catch. should they find them. On the opposite side of the coin we have fisheries which under stock or have problems....... What we need first off is ballanced fisheries to host our qualifiers.......Same with the rivers.

Fred,

I didn't forget small stillwaters. I actually think that the multiple entries in the small stillwater competition is working well. And I agree that host waters of our national finals must strive to provide a level playing field for all.

I would agree for the most part with Andy, the system is flawed and I think he has given a viable solution. I am sure that this will not suit all the people though. As the old saying goes you can please some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time.

Would this be even in the shop window if England had achieved a Gold medal in Orkney? I doubt it. This however does not make Andy’s post less relevant. I personally think getting rid of the rollovers was a mistake, in my time with England teams I have not witnessed any withholding of information in order to gain a better individual placing.

Selection will always be an emotive subject, I would like to see a selection system employed for European and World teams. Not because I believe that there would be much difference in the teams as the anglers selected for these teams generally are at the top of the game. What a qualifier would give is proprietary to the system so that anglers do not feel it is a closed shop.

As ever we can come on here and say this and that should happen, but if you want to make a difference you need to approach your club secretary and ask for it to be raised through the AGM. If a viable option is put forward through the correct channels I am sure it would be given due consideration and voted upon appropriately. If after such a process you are still unhappy get involved, volunteer for a job help make the change. If not dry your eyes and crack on.

Agree with the point about scraping the rollovers has been a mistake, what are England's result's since this was done?

I think a qualifier for the Euro's and Worlds could be good, but it has to be fished to the same format as those championships i.e. 5 sessions in a 200m peg. this eliminates the more agile anglers running to the front of the group to fish clean water.
This doesn't happen in the Euro's and Worlds as your pegged.
The home nations as a whole are drifting further behind many of the European teams becaused we dont fish enough river matches and our rules couldn't be more different!!

Personally I don't think rollovers are the problem, it is the fact that the England Team is selected from a one off, 8hr, single day boat competition.
I'm sure, and I know it has happened in the past, ( not inferring this year's teams at all ), that a less than, shall we say, competent angler has qualified by being in the right place at the right time and/or sharing a boat with a local expert or top class angler and getting through to the National Team that way and even copycatting his way to catch enough fish, sometimes even with the flies supplied to him by his boat partner.
Sometimes these anglers learn quickly, have the right temperament, and do well in their International. Sadly, sometimes they don't and find themselves well out of their depth.
We all know it would be great to have an extensive selection process based on numerous sessions etc, but what about the COST in terms of money and man hours?
To run qualifiers for European and World Teams as you describe would necessitate at least another 3 days + 2 practise days for a regional qualifier and then at least the same for the National, and then how would you be sure that the best anglers would be in best teams for the best venues for the teams you end up with the European and World Championships, or would you run separate qualifiers for each and double the COST again.
The people who make the rules for team selection for our International competitions, do it in the best way they see fit, otherwise they would change them surely. There is no ideal solution and there never will be as far as I can see.
Remember, one man's meat is another man's poison and you can't please all.....................all of the time.
