Default International Bank Competition Final

I thought I'd have a wee look at the venue for the 2011 international bank final and found this.

Rainbow trout fishingLOUGH BARFINNIHY (KENMARE, CO. KERRY)
A 35 acre mountain lough, 6½ miles from Kenmare and one mile off the Kenmare to Killarney road, at Molls Gap. In a superb location, the entire shoreline is overlooked from the nearby road. Access is open and excellent, the rocky shoreline 100% fishable and the sparkling clean, clear lake waters especially attractive. The lake holds a very good stock of small wild native Brown Trout and adult Rainbow Trout are stocked regularly to maintain a high stock density and give worthwhile angling recommended methods include worms, using a float - artificial flies, or try a small spinner......

That's all I could find on the fishery. As I see it, a low nutrient mountain lake with tiny browns and stocked rainbows perhaps struggling to find food other than terrestrial offerings from the wind. A regular week see's people sitting in chairs with maggots and worms and spinning with meps. Seems to me like an out and out stockie festival.

I could be wrong....I'd love to be corrected

Carn't see the purpose of this thread ......

A stocky fest on wild browns ?...........

Do you know the stocking policy of the rainbows nearing the International ?....

Do you know what nations will be targeting which species yet.....?

What will be the limit size to record a wild brown ?.....

Can they rule out dry fly now ?

I'm fairly certain that the lake will recieve a lot of pressure leading up to the International making a stockie fest questionable, but i could be wrong !

Are you fishing it ?

Lets wait and see the results first...

I personally avoid fly fishing on any mixed bait and fly venue. I find it off-putting like many anglers I know. What I'm asking is if the information on the web page is up to date? It could be old. It is perhaps being run by new management. I think Fred, that you think I'm trying to put the dampners on the competition. I can assure you it's quite the reverse, this bank competition was way overdue. My concern is that the water in question is not befitting for the final. There must be many venues in Ireland capable of holding this comp.

Sorry mate !, { way i read it }.

I havn't heard all that much about it, only what i have heard is that it's a real nice place with good fishing.

I'm 100% with you in that all Internationals need to be as fair as can be and certainly match fit, otherwise, whats the bludy point !...... I've been harpouring on for a good while about fisheries that host qualifiers / finals etc........ At the end of the day i and every comp. angler expect a good, clean and fair competition and frankly a number of places don't measure up !.

Denis has a good head on his shoulders and i'm sure he'll do what he can to help provide a fair International.
Have you emailed TAFFI with your thoughts ?

Fred.

No I haven't...As well as the competitive fun I'd like to believe that the trip would be an enjoyable one considering the expense.

Think we all know how hard wee brownies can be at the best of times in difficult conditions...let alone wee buggers that have managed to avoid bubble floats and single maggots never mind spinners I'd just like to see the whole thing going well so it continues and thrives which it will no doubt do. I just don't want to see any set backs. Wouldn't the browns be out of season also?

They probably would count Fred. After all its a fish, huh! Measured Who's gonna be measuring them? Aww right, now I see, that would make it complicated, eh! People could claim a 7" fish that was 6.5" hmmm.

So now it probably would be down to rainbows, unless any trout was classed as 1 point or two. It would work that way.

Denis is a fine and honest chap. The venue will be fair for everyone, but I imagine it will have been selected to suit the Irish Lads especially ( why wouldn't it? ).
The brownies may not be out of season either. The fact is that until someone replies on this thread who actually knows, this post and the others are all just speculation.
Can't wait to get across to Ireland for the competition and the apres ski.

hello all, the comp will be fished for rainbows only, brownies wont count if any are even caught,it has been stocked reguarly with rainbows each season over the last 35 years but it is classed as a wild brown lake only because their is tiny browns in it and because of this Europe states it has to be classed as one,but the browns are so small and insignificant that you wouldnt waste five minutes fishing for them, the lake is closed to the public on the 30th of september each year 3 weeks before the comp. It is a fine venue with some near wild big fish which have grown on in there and there is plenty of room for casting. IFI will be stocking it a few weeks before the comp to the best of my knowledge.
