Default river nationals

Im controlling on the river heat at the tummel tomorrow. just a quick question. I have the jist of what i am supposed to do, but is there anything that is a big no-no as I wouldnt want to upset my angler or cause grief for the angler who is taking me. I was going to take a camera and rattle a few pics while if there is a lull in the fishing but dont want to put any noses out of joint!

wullie

PS is anyone from here going tomorrow

Hi Wullie

Not a lot to worry about. Just stay well back from your angler and watch him all the time so that when he has a fish you are there ready to measure it. Have a good day.

chalky jnr here. I did it last year for dougie graham and went with Jake Harvey. Had a great day and learned a lot of new methods about river fishing. Would like to have done it again but some of the organisers changed the rules so that juniors couldn't be controllers. Enjoy your day.

Unless you've had specific instructions to the contrary don't make your angler climb out of the river to check the barbs and size every time he changes flies. Check the flies before he starts and thereafter when he gets a fish, no real reason to do it otherwise.

camera is ok.remember that you have to unhook the fish.stay close to where your angler is.if he decides to wade to the other side of the tummel that's his problem getting back to you. no wading on your part, have a good day.

just back from controlling at the tummel. i was drawn by a bloke by the name of Paul Buchanan and we had what turned out to be a great day. Paul fished what turned out to be some seriously hard water. starting at the top of the competition section for his first 2 sessions and moving to almost the bottom of the section for his next 2. he was one of only 3 anglers ( i think) who avoided the dreaded blank and went on to win the heat with 13 placepoints. second was Dick Logan and creelman was third I think. sorry but didnt catch the other 2 qualifiers names. thoroughly enjoyable day out and will definetly go back. cant wait to learn how to fish the rivers. here are some pics of the day

Glad you enjoyed yourself. I was passing the tummel today and stopped at the Big layby at the stonewall. Saw a lot of yellow dun's coming off the water and quite a few fish rising in tight against the bank.

Water looked a bit high tho?

Was there much fish moving?

were you at the stonewall in the morning? if so, Dick Logan was fishing just below you on the far bank. upstream at the rocky area at the burn is where I was with Paul Buchanan. not a lot of rising fish in the areas we were in. they would rise in 5-10 minute flashes and then disappear. that said Paul had most of his fish on the dry but thats becuase he worked hard for them after they had risen.
