Default Irish team "fish off"

Good luck to all the anglers taking part in the "Fish Off" on Lough Owel today. All of the anglers who represented Ireland in the 2010 Loughstyle matches are competing against each other, for the remaining 8 places on the 2011 Irish Lough Teams.

Then its down to a selection committee to see who goes where.

This is the first year of this "fish off" since the roll over has been done away with.

Looking forward to hearing the results.

So OO, how does that work?

Are there already 20 qualifiers for the 2011 Teams?

If there were no rollovers, and I assume there were 2010 qualifiers for the 2011 team, why weren't 28 anglers selected?

There are already 20 qualifiers for the 2011 teams.

10 came from the 2010 National Championships (Lough Lein Killarney)
Paul McArdle, Seamus O'Loughlin, Thomas Lynch
Robert Crichton, John O'Neil, Francis McSherry,
Kieran Casey, Brian Russell, Robert Reilly
Derek O'Brien.

10 came from the 2010 Interprovincial Championships (lough Lene Westmeath)
Denis Goulding Fechin McMorrow Greg Long
Andy Duncan Arden Pollock Niall O’Neill
Michael Monaghan James Maguire Pat Hoare
Andrew Boyd.

The remaining 8 will come from today's fish off.

Then a selection committee will pick the 2 teams. One for Orkneys one for Grafham.

Simple

Kinda like a second chance if you blow it in the finals then?

So, will the 'fish off' be held every year, after the Interprovincial, & National Finals? And, is todays fish off, made up of the non-qualfiers from the two matches?

No mate the fish off today is made up of the 28 anglers who represented Ireland this year. The 14 from Lough Conn (spring) and 14 from Traws (Autumn)

The idea was by getting rid of the 4 rollovers from each international, it would no longer give anglers a reason to potentially hold back info or flies. Instead they will compete for those 8 places back at home after the International matches.

My only concern is that this fish off gives an angler who performs poorly at an international ,another chance to get back on the international team, by perhaps catching only 1 fish at the fish off. And the anglers who perform consistantly well at internationals may struggle to get that 1 fish. It could potentially further weaken the Irish Teams. I hope not, but time will tell.

Time will tell mate, wether this new system will work or not. I genuinely hope it does work and Ireland get back to winning Gold medals.

Not sure how Lough Owel is fishing. I did hear that at a club last weekend 34 anglers caught just 4 fish Hope there is a better result today.

All makes sense now mate.

Sounds like tough fishing.

Best of luck to the 28!

Unofficial results.

1st John Walsh (3 fish)
2nd Frank Kelly (3 fish)

3rd Mark Duncan (2fish)
4th Andy Duncan (2fish)
Aidan Hefferman (2fish)
Lawrence Gibb (2 fish)
Liam Buckley (1 fish)
Sean Bowen (1 fish)

Only unofficial results after speaking to some of the anglers taking part

Well done to all who qualified but especially to my team mates Mark Duncan (Duncan disorderly) & Lawrence Gibb (Gibbo), just back from representing Flextec Emerald Islanders at Rutland for 6 days and now back on the Irish Team and both would have held their place on the old rollover system, 2 great consistant anglers

Just back after 2 days of torture on Owel. Well done to all those that qualified on what was a dour lake. Well done to my own club mate Aidan 'Budso' Heffernan......thats daddy to you Bahbah and to my neighbour John Walsh on qualifying for next years team.....top anglers and very well done. Another enjoyable day out with Jack Spratt, great company in a boat as always

Obviously a bit disappointed after yesterday, but am now looking forward to fishing the Anglican Water comp next year instead.

Not sure about this new system.

Only 2 out of the top 6 from the Spring International retained their places and even worse still only 1 out of the top 8 from the Autumn International retained their places. While we still have a system where people qualify by catching just 1-5 fish we will always struggle imo at the Internationals. I like the Welsh system of qualifying myself and think its time that we use a similar model in Ireland.

One of Irelands top anglers, if not the top angler, spent 5 days practicing on Owel for this fish off. Blanked on 4 of the days. Practice, commitment, effort, dedication etc. are not rewarded where fishing is so slow. He might as well have shown up at 3 o clock on Sunday and he was just as likely to qualify. He would still be my first pick If I could choose someone for a team. We have to develop a system where this type of angler will come to the top. Only then will we become competitive.
