Fish the soane for the cats, harder now than it was. Your best bet would be the ebro in spain. i reckon you would need to tie some thing up that gave off lots of vibration and posibly some kind of rattle. Fished from a boat and worked near the surface might just work. I know the zander anglers in both france and spain get cats when they are spinning so in theory it should work. jim

When I was in Malaysia I saw someone catch a 15lb Patin, a Catfish that looks suspiciously like the Mekong variety. He caught it on a slow sinking 'Bread Fly', a simple affair made from white fur with a little foam to slow it's descent through the water.

I had to make do with a 12lb Pacu, a strain of Piranha imported from Brazil. Now that was a fighting fish!!

well if your gona try - maybe use a very large rattling (weighted on the bottom) fly soaked in mackeral guts, retrieve slowly at night. and use ground bait too!

oh and take a camera

Hi

I`m certain the Giant Kekong and Striped Catfish found in Asia can be caught on the fly as although they are vegetarians they readily eat bread and as richardnw found the Pacu love bread too. A great catch.

In Thailand the Various catfish species are to be found in more and more lakes and I would suspect that trying for them with an intermediate or a fast sinking line in deeper lakes such as Bung Sam Lan would work well with bread imitations. The fly would ideally be bouyant as these fish can feed anywhere from bottom to sub surface. A static to slow retrieve imitationg the chunk of bread should work but it may be that some groundbaiting with bread would get thm on the feed.I would recommend a#10 or #12 outfit as these cats are brutal - leader about 30lb bs.

Sorry no experience with the Wels catfish but as the piccie shows it can be done. Give it a shot. The locals tend to say it cant be done but thats cos no one tried.
