Hi Folks,
Dates and speakers for the Winter programme have been finalised and are as below, please remember we have an 8pm start and that we have changed venue to the John Thompson Inn at Ingelby -
The John Thompson Inn & Brewery - Home
Membership is available to all for £20 per season and non members and guests can pay a nominal fee on the door.
Monday, 10th January: Steve Parton.
Steve is well known to most anglers in this area and tends to be controversial at the least. His main topic will be deep fishing for big browns and rainbows. What we will finish on is up to you!
Monday, 17th January: Skittles Night at the Old Cottage Tavern in Byrkley Street in Burton.
If you haven’t played skittles before, I can guarantee that you will enjoy it. The evening will be limited to 30 members and their partners, first come, first served. Food will be served and the cost is just £6 per head.
Monday, 24th January: Rob Edmunds.
Rob is probably one of the best advocates of fly fishing currently on the circuit. His CV is as follows: England Youth International, England Senior International, England Youth International Manager, 6 European Titles….(House of Hardy International – Individual Winner… House of Hardy International Team Winner x 2, Lexus European Open Individual Winner, Lexus European Open Team Winner, Troutmasters Winner), 50+ double figure trout (with a double from all 4 Anglian Waters),Record Limit Bags from Grafham (Bank & Boat). Not bad. Now will you come along and listen to what he has to say? Need some questions to ask at the end of the evening so if you have any, be prepared, he will answer anything!
Monday, 31st January: Wendy & Ray Gibson.
Need no introduction as both are members of the Association. Wendy is a brilliant fly tier and Ray will be bringing his ‘shop’ along too.
Monday, 7th February: Paul & Sue Sissons.
Paul has been Team manager of the England Ladies team for the past four years and has been involved with the team since 2005. Has fished rivers and lochs all over the country and writes articles for the Sheffield Angling Star.
Sue is a GAIC instructor and is also an APGAI and Level 2 coach. She has 14 years experience and has fished European and Commonwealth Championships since 2000 and has an enviable six Gold Medals for her efforts in the Home Internationals.
Impressive cv’s to say the least. They will aim to mix the competition approaches with methods of fishing reservoirs: search methods etc. We will mention other fishing but focus on reservoirs. The will also bring some items for sale if anyone is interested: some rods, flies, lines, leader etc at sensible prices usually approx 40% discount.
Monday, 14th February: John Watson.
John is an author who wrote a book on fishing on the River Dove and now, his second book is about to be published. It covers the life and work of Roger Woolley who was certainly the greatest fly tier that tied flies specifically for the River Dove. Not only that but he lived locally in Hatton/Tutbury.
Monday, 21st February: Marston’s Brewery Visit.
Yes, this is your chance to see how the infamous ‘Pedigree’ is brewed. The initial price is £6.50 and that will include two pints of what you have just seen brewed. Food is also available at a nominal cost, subsidised by the Association.
Monday, 28th February: Skateboard Dave.
Who? Dave is an angler with a difference. He is aged 45, runs 60 miles a week and sells skateboards. So what is so different? Well, he fly fishes for any fish that he can catch, in any stream that he can find, including streams in the middle of cities.
Monday, 7th March: Philip White & Sarah Barratt.
Phil needs no introduction, he will be bringing along a DVD and doing some fly tying himself. Sarah is the lady who is in charge of the fishing at Carsington Water and she will be giving us a quick rundown of what to expect from the fishery this season.
Monday, 14th March: Stuart Crofts & Ifor Jones.
Stuart will be making his first visit to the club and what a night it promises to be! He is fresh from television appearances and is one of the premier entomologists in the country. His talk will be on ‘putting the fly back into fly fishing’. This will be followed by a short session from Foremark’s manager, Ifor Jones on just what we will be getting for our money this season.
Other dates to remember:
Probably the most important date is Saturday, 19th March when the club has it’s Trophy Night at the John Thompson. A three course meal and a good night guaranteed.
Another new addition is a fly fishing show that will be held in Burton Town Hall on Sunday, 9th October. The club will be heavily involved with this event mainly caused by the Trentham Show, normally held at the end of October, being moved to Stafford in June.
That’s it. Good enough? We hope so. Come and join us on our first night and enjoy yourself.
By the way, we now have our own website:

Thanks,
Jason
