The Gods have been kind.
The Gods of angling have really been good to me over the last couple of weeks. I've had three short sessions after perch with a total of 14 between 2-2 and 3-3; the last on Friday evening which produced a 2-2 and two at 2-8I went back yesterday afternoon to try another four or five of spots which looked likely for a stripey, but no joy. I ended up in my original swim, but the perch seemed to have deserted the place. I suspect the slightly better weather this week has pushed the perch mating season button and they've all gone off for a bit of "fin over".
However, the first bite produced a near 3lb chub so the trip wasn't a blank. As the light began to go and my fingers started telling me that they would feel happier wrapped around a glass of chardonnay in the pub, the quivertip whipped round and I hit a good fish which roared off downstream. My first thought was that it was a biggish trout, of which there are plenty in the river, but as I brought him back upstream I saw an enormous white mouth and a big black tail. No trout, but a very large chub. When I finally netted it and put it in the weigh sling it went 6lbs 11oz - beating my personal best by 1-11. I was using a brand new feeder rod which I had only bought that morning so two chub for the better part of 10lbs was as good a way of christening it as I could have wished for.
Like I said, the gods have been kind.
