Sorry - I should have made it clearer that I wasn't referring to Walker's record carp, which, as you say, was 44lb and was caught in 1952. The 58lb fish he netted was never claimed as a record, or even as a capture, as it wasn't taken on rod and line; he found it stranded in shallow water when the carp were spawning and scooped it up, weighed it and released it in deeper water.

My point was that carp have existed in UK waters at weights over fifty pounds for many years, and such growth need not be attributed (as it so often is by those who seek to denigrate carp fishing) to them eating anglers' bait.

I am not knocking carp fishing, I love my coarse fishing and a nice carp is great fun.

However:
Only bite in a week
motored out in a boat
towed it back

Seems an odd way to be an angler to me.

Each to their own. I see no fun in organised competitive fly fishing, but I wouldn't wish to prevent others taking part in it, nor do I regard it as an inferior branch of angling. I'm not a big fan of pike fishing either, though I do a bit each winter. Again, good luck to those who like to fish for pike. It's only fishing after all.

We shouldn't forget this one either:

51lb8oz in 1980.

A good photographic history of the British carp record here:

I must say, Walker's fish looks the finest of them - my own 24lb PB carp was a "gut bucket" mirror, and they're not pretty fish.
