When I was a boy, a well meaning relative gave me a roe-based bait system consisting of an orange powder which you mixed with water to make a paste and a fancy plastic punch for turning the paste into pellets.

It may have been some kind of salmon or trout roe, and thus illegal, and I have no idea whether it was bought in this country or abroad, but my main finding was that it was absolutely rubbish! Never caught a thing on it.

I bought some powerbait and power eggs from an angling fair at Chatsworth years ago and never used it. Took some with me to Hathersage once after seeing some Trout in the stream in town/village. As soon as trout sniffed it they shot away like their tails were on fire, spooked.

No bad come-back intended here, but every thing has an expiration date. Few days back (getting ready for a trip to Montana) and digging through/sorting out non-fly fishing gear and found a few jars of Salmon Roe eggs.

'Age' makes you do really stupid things ... open one of the jars I found. Even the Dogs jumped back in disgust.

The word 'vile' doesn't even get close .....
