Question John Wilson Travel Avon/Quiver.

Have noticed that there is now a five piece travel version of the famous John Wilson Avon/Quiver rod. Anyone had a chance to try one or even have a look? Seems a seriously interesting new piece of kit.

the original is a great rod.

But what are you going to be using it for? I know the title is the give away, but it is a through action rod. So technicaly not the best for trotting.

Personally I use the J W Youngs travel Barbel. It's certainly not suitcase length, but short for a coarse rod. It's fast actioned and a wonderful finish. I also know where to get them sub £90.

However just tp complete this rambling, it is useless for casting light floats ant distance.

I had one of the originals and they were great, mainly because there wasn't anything else equivalent at the time....but now there's quite a few. For chub and barbel I now use a Fox Barbel duo - twin top - one straight with 1.5lb tc and the other which takes 4 tips, 2 carbon, 2 glass, superb rod and also great value. They also do an Avon version. Fox quality better than the John Wilson range IMHO:

Also Korum neoteric multifeeder (twin top again), also great quality.

J W Young have revamped the range. Gone is the rosewood reel seat to be replaced with the normal plastic, if top quality, screw job. The benefits are though that the rod is lighter.

Importantly there are some new rods in the range including a 5 piece travel trotter.

Tackle Exchange in Walton on Thames has them for £79.

I still have one of the originals.A reasonable enough rod, probably not the best for trotting with and a little too soft/through actioned-having said that it has landed many carp to 20lb+,barbel and nice chub for me so can't complain. As an allrounder type of rod it was a good enough buy.
