Craig ? i look at every post you make (for amusement) and i really need to know now why some are spelling perfect and some are as above ??

as for setting up a pin, all you need to do is buy a 200m spool of 3 or 4lb mono and fill it up, simple as that

or

byu a 2000m solop of moon and flil it up (couldn't resist it )

spelling aside....

On some 'pins you can sometimes getting line bedding in on itself, so best not too put any more on than you need - its not like a fixed spool reel where you need to fill it up. Depends what you want it for, but if for close/medium range trotting, you might be ok with 50m. Braid only necessary if you are intending to do very long range trotting. If its been sat around though, you may need to do some basic maintenance on the reel first though, unless its still spins well.

I also put on line so that it comes off the top of the spool...this means the line comes off the spool in an anti clockwise direction, if you're looking at it from the left side of the reel. It also means you wind in "backwards", ie clockwise. The line has a more direct route through the eyes and IMO is less likely to tangle......50 to 100 m plenty for most applications. What is the reel? Some are worth a lot of money!

I find that the reels with "spacers" or "pins" between the sideplates of the spool (Youngs Purist, Grice and Young, Speedia etc.) need much less line to prevent it "digging in" after landing a fish. This causes difficulties with the trot (jerky) and sometimes even the line sticking completely and wrapping rond the drum in the opposite direction.

On the other hand. reels with a solid spool (Youngs Rapidex and Trudex, Okuma, etc.) can handle a couple of hundred yards without a problem.

As for set up, Unlike the above poster (Kried nice fish in your recent posts by the way!) I have the line coming off the bottom of the reel and wind with my left hand (I'm right handed) and have no problems.

Dont bother using braid on your pin for the main line or backing, there is no need at all.
Just take off all the old line and buy some new stuff. A good line would be in the region of about 3lb bs, you only need 50 yards of it, this is to stop bedding in of the line after a fish.

Use a good quality reel line, so that you can slide your shot easily without damaging the line. Avoid high tech low diameter pre-stretched lines as these are only any good for hooklenghths or using with a pole.
Look for a good reel line Like maxima, bayer perlon, ultima, Drennan floatfish, or Daiwa monofil.
It does not matter if the line comes off the top or the bottom of the pin,it is down to personel preference.
Also when you retreive after every trot bat the center pin drum to make it spin quicker on the retreive.

I should have maybe said, I reel in with my left hand, just in case that wasn't clear. Top or bottom, don't seem to make much real difference, just my preference to have the line coming off the top.

Personally, I find the line coming off the top of the spool easier to control, especially on windy days although a few mates have made some extremely cutting remarks about this...."it's like using stabilizers on a push-bike Rich" etc. etc. Takes a bit of remembering to wind back to front though.

Cheers
