Default Trotting with a nymph!

Has anybody tried trotting a small nymph under a stickfloat for roach or any of the coarse fish. I have heard it has been done but how successful is it? Any advice appreciated

I suppose it would be quite effective. After all it isnt much different from fishing nymphs under an indicator! I might give it a go this week actually! If you do try it let me know how you get on.

All the best

Sam

If I ran out of bait I used to do it in the '60s on the day ticket water of the Driffield canal, near Wansford, to catch record threatening grayling on the Sawyer Pheasant Tail nymph. It worked but I could get them better on trotted red worms.

Try trotting the leaded pink shrimp patterns, you'll be suprised!

The reason I ask is that upstream nymping on my local river for coarse fish is very hard due to its depth anywere from 5 to 9 ft as it is tidal. I need to upstream nymph to get the fly down and once the first few feet of flyline is below the surface it becomes difficult to stay in contact with the nymph.
Quite often I have stripped in the line to find a perch on the end, yet I never even saw the bite. Should I strip back faster than the current so I am pulling the fly behind the leader, or should the fly be in front of the leader as it comes back to you.
Either way I need the flys down deep.
