Default pin wont spin... (well not much)

i had the annual trip to timsbury with buddies today, i set up with my youngs bob james super lightweight, i have only used the reel twice before.. it just didnt spin that well, the day was saved by my cortesi but can anyone tell me what i need to do to get the pin spinning free again

it chucked it down the last time i used it, i dried it and pit a drop of 3 in 1 oil on it... do i need to clean the bearings in lighter fluid then used sewing machine oil .. only freaking out a bit ...

I don't know what kind of bearings your reel has, but if they are ball bearings, have a good look to see whether they have gone rusty. I know you only used the reel ion fresh water, which isn't as severe as salt, but I had a dismal experience with a Fin Nor Ahab fixed spool reel a few months ago; after a few days use in Tobago, the bloody thing seized up, despite rinsing out after use. Pulling it apart, I found the two ball races on which the crank rotated were covered in rust. Fortunately, my local bearing supplier (I didn't bother with Fin Nor, as I didn't want another set of crappy bearings) produced a pair of stainless steel bearings, which have proved faultless in use. Best of luck!

I have the same reel and I had the same problem.
I had lubricated the reel with fancy aerospace PTE oil.
When i told George he was not impressed
I then washed the bearings with petrol as instructed and lubed it with sewing machine oil.

It is now perfect

Yes, the 3 in 1 you used is probably a bit too thick.

I have been lazy and other than a wash under the tap have left the bearings on my reels alone and they still run fine. I will give them a service when I need to, but I'm a great believer in the "if it aint broke, don't fix it rule"! (only comes from frequent attempts in the past to "improve" things....and made them worse in the process)

Pm me your address, I have some oil for one of these that I imagine would be good for a Centrepin

Scroll compressor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We run it at about 80-90 deg C, but it remains quite viscous even below freezing. I'll pop some in the post.

Just a couple of obvious questions but ones well worth asking as I have seen both of these things done firstly have you backed off the spool tensioner that's the little wheel on one of the spokes if not do so as that may be your answer the other question is have you played with the end float adjustment screw if you have back that off a touch as that is a common error if you haven't leave it alone!
If it is neither of these things then pop the bearings out wash them in lighter fluid and lubricate with a drop of singer sewing machine oil bear in mind that when it comes to putting oil in centerpins less is more!

Just a quick query....why is less oil better?. I soaked the bearing in oil and wiped off the excess. I am assuming it attracts less dirt having less.

I think the theory would be that too much oil will cause resistance against the bearing.
The thinest oil seams the best but if you have too much of even the thinnest oil i suppose it could cause more resistance than a thin coating.

Todays task...strip down again and flush the bearing out and a tiny wee tad of oil.
This centerpin malarkey is higher maintenance than the girlfriend
