Probably more fun stripping her down tho

Back in my youthful skateboarding days - late 70s - we used graphite powder on the wheel bearings, super fast it made them - anyone tried that? Obviously its a dry powder so no sticky nastiness.

it chucked it down the last time i used it, i dried it and pit a drop of 3 in 1 oil on it... do i need to clean the bearings in lighter fluid then used sewing machine oil .. only freaking out a bit ...
youngs use abec 5 bearings ,but if they're not used often the grease in the bearings can stiffen up ,quick fix is too use a hair dryer to warm up the hub whilst spinning it ,otherwise its a case of re-lubing the bearings as priscribed

if you can't get sowing machine oil ,wahl hair clipper oil is just as good ,and high grade car engine oil 10/40 or 15/40 (i use castrol gtx heavy use oil ,same as i puts in me cars ,ok its the left over bit in the plastic bottle i use) new oil not used mind ! . if a reel has large open bearings then a good grease up with a LM grease (i use castrol LM ) is good ,not only does it lubricate but will quiet down noisy bearings to a harmonious hum

why not buy a true center pin reel and then you wont have bearing problems.
And less start up inertia to get the drum moving.
This thread is looking like a multiplier tunning experts site (anyone remember rocket fuel?)

Answer:- With modern bearings there is nothing between a ball bearing reel and a true centerpin actioned reel in terms of inertia to overcome.
Also you would be surprised how many people can make a complete ar*e of lubing a plain bearing reel and then they will often compound the error by messing around with the end float adjustment screw I should know I have had to put dozens right over the years and don't even get me started about the pillocks that think that they will just adjust the spokes a little on their aerial reels!!!
True centerpin actioned reels are a delight to use but they are frequently overpriced the best of the breed is in my opinion the Browning revolver because with the solid drum you don't get line bedding as an issue and that is why it is my go to reel when I am demonstrating Wallis casting at game fairs and other events especially when I am expected to put out very long casts as a part of the demo.
However for most, a ball bearing reel especially one of the Okuma Adventa pros or the Sheffields is the way ahead if they want effortless reliable performance, which is why I recommend them to those who want such a reel.
I hope that this provides an adequate explanation
Cheers

well a little bit of TLC has my reel singing again, i popped it on the radiator for 1/2 an hour then spend a few minutes with a cotton bud with a little lighter fluid to loosen any crud 9there was some.. finally a couple of well aimed spots of sewing machine oil and we are back on the game... took a beautiful chub of 6lb 2 os on a hunk of breadflake today and over a dozen grayling on red maggot the biggest was a shade under 3 lb...

Glad you got your reel sorted out Martin, Sewing machine oil is all you will ever need in future.

This ties in with the advice I was given by Graham Pepler when I bought my John Wilson Heritage 'pin from Davis Tackle in Christchurch over 10 years ago. I follow it to the letter. In essence, he said... Take care to keep it clean; don't even think about d1cking about with the end float screw; when you have finished cleaning the reel after a days' fishing put one drop of reel oil - no more - on the pin itself and re-assemble the reel. I use Daiwa Reel Lube oil for this purpose but I am not sure you can get it in the UK any more.

I have caught hundreds of fish using this reel over the succeeding winters, and I have never experienced any of the problems described above...
