Default Centre pins and sub zero temps.

I noticed that last week on the Clyde my centre pin operated far better when the temp. was just above freezing as opposed to the week before when it was about -2 deg. Is it just my imagination or is it a fact with possibly the metal contracting in the cold.I must add I am new to this Trotting Malarkey and the centrepin is an Ikonix which was only about £45. The water conditions were the same and float set up no different.

Bit of an odd one that! To be honest what it would appear to suggest is that its not operating quite as it should do when the temp is above freezing - it should be free running all the time. That model is the same reel as the Marco Cortesi from Dragon Carp and another marketed by Grande Slam. Just got different badges on. They all come from the same factory and although its a good reel I suspect quality control by the importer is a bit hit and miss due to the price, so its possible you have a slightly imperfect one, it just depends how "bad" it is normal conditions - I have 2 pins, the Cortesi equivalent of yours and an Okuma model and both run very smoothly indeed all the time. It could perhaps be the metal spool shrinking a touch and not catching on the frame like you say.... however the frame would also shrink you'd think. Or it may be whatever lubricant is used in the internal bearing reacting (although I can't think why). Daft question, but there wasn't just a bit more flow in the river was there? Interesing one!

in cold temps grease which was probably used on the bearings will stiffen up creating a stiffer start up with the reel , better cleaning it out and using some light oil like 3 in 1, WD 40 ,or a silicon spray

by the way if you use a silicon spray you want less than a light oil ,as in really cold temps this can thicken slightly but nothing like grease

Wash the bearings out in Lighter fuel to get rid of the grease then when dry add a drop of singer sewing machine oil to each bearing. Job done!
