Just found this so will add my bit too about WD40; It is brilliant for most general applications-washing/degreasing, dismantling due to cappillary action etc. I do however rate Plus Gas as far superior
Do not ever, I repeat ever use on shotguns as the active ingredient as already touched upon reacts over long term with some metals,Solder(used to hold barrells/ribs etc together) is one such material.
It is fine to spray a little onto a rag and keep in a ziploc bag to give a wet gun a wipe before putting into the car to prevent rapid rusting but as soon as you get home WIPE IT OFF and use 3 in 1
Having sold all my old 'pins and wanting a new modern syle one what would you reccommend

If you are looking for an excellent all round workhorse the Okuma Adventa Pro is my personal favourite though the slightly dearer Sheffield is preferred by some My choice is based upon the fact that both perform equally well but the handles on the Adventa pro are a little more inboard which makes life easier when Wallis casting.
Avoid the Okuma Kennet and the Trent versions the line guard on the kennet makes batting back virtualy impossible and the star drag feature on the Trent is of little or no value when trotting.
Above these in the price range are the Youngs Reels fine reels but other than asthetics don't offer much more in the real world.
Above and beyond this are the beautiful works of art that are turned out by the likes of Gary Mills and if you expect to live for many years you could add your name to Chris Lythes waiting list.
Hardy Greys do a couple of reels the cheaper option is the Bewick which is in fact the better reel but it pays to be a bit handy with a set of fine warding files to radius off the sharp edges round the reel foot oh and avoid the Mark one the later mark two is the better option.
The conquest is simply best avoided overpriced junk!
I hope this helps.
Cheers
Alan

Also to add to Alan's list for a reel without paying hundreds of pounds would be the Holland & Wilkinson Rotoglide @ £90

(DO NOT confuse this one with the cheaper £30 model which I wouldn't touch with a barge pole)
I've had the Rotoglide for a few months now and it performs equally well as some very expensive reels.

George, when you say "the £30 version" I guess you are meaning the H&W Hydraglide, not the Cortesi (pretty good) £30 'pin also from Dragon Carp? I just looked on DC website and they don't seem to sell the Hydraglide one now anyway - I don't actually remember seeing it, but I know it got slated.

I assume Holland & Wilkinson is a made up Olde English type sounding name by Dragon Carp, same as the made up "Marco Cortesi" name (read somewhere it was butcher's name they saw on a van or something!). Interesting you rate the Rotoglide highly as I wasn't sure if it was a bit of a gimmick with its fancy box and mock vintage name.

ps - oil - I had trouble getting some sewing machine oil quickly but found that hair clipper oil works well, also the expensive valve oil from my lad's french horn I suppose its just any very fine high quality oil, rather than your thicker 3 in 1 stuff.

Hi Jeff,
Yes mate I was meaning the Hydraglide, I just forgot its name when I posted, DC sent it to me by mistake instead of my Rotoglide so had a play with it and to be honest it was absolutely terrible!
Not the Cortesi's mate I have one of the 1st Cortesi's before they became very popular & it runs exceptionally well.

The rotoglide is just a clone of an okuma and as I say it runs exceptionally well and everything is good on it, I took a chance on it when it first came out & to be perfectly honest it puts some more expensive models I have to the back of the shelf. I quite like it & use it frequently The one I received is different to the one advertised at the DC website its silver front with a black spool

Hair clipper oil is probably the same stuff as sewing machine oil anyway its a light oil designed for fast action motion.

Hi George

It looks just like the Okuma Sheffield mate . If it is I totaly agree, out of all the pins I have I still rate the Sheffield as the best of the lot.

It looks in the sand but it isn't mate, I assure you its resting on the edge of the net with the rod handle on the sand, the Grayling's dorsal is covering the rim sitting on the net
