If you fancy a trip down the M8 the Murdieston Dams in Greenock have both Pike and Perch. Both are council owned and no permits are required to fish them.

Greenock&District AC have a reservoir that holds both Pike and Perch and permits can be bought from Petersons Fishing Shop in Greenock for a fiver a day.

The G&D water is still classified as a trout water and as such fishing on the reservoir is fly only.

The canal is the place to go for Pike - try and get as far away from the city as possible...if you and the boy have bikes then all the better - you can cycle somewhere right along the canal tow path.

When I was a boy we used to fish for perch in Hogganfield loch dont know if there is any perch nowadays . Another place that was full of perch was Castle Semple in Lochwinnoch which is only 15 mins down the road . The reservoir I fish has loadsa the damn things but it is a fly only reservoir being honest I hate the damn things ive seen myself catching 20+ on a summers night .

Default The Moss

Try 'the Moss' in Kilmacolm...care has to be taken as its mainly floating weed mats but that said, they do hold my clumsy 19st.

If you look at an OS map there is a small outflow with a sluice at one end, near the footpath. You can park a single car where the path meets that track. Then walk tot he outflow down, cross the sluice and fish all the way along that bank.

Tends to be very weedy so spinning is tough going. Fly can be great and the average size is pretty good ....don't think I have had anything less than 6 inches over the years.

I used to fish it as a kid and never once saw another angler. As it's all swampy lochans it has a great amount of wildlfe.

I have seen some perch in the canal at Maryhill, along with enough roach to keep you busy.

Agree with the other posters, the canal is the place to go, flies with a touch of red in should get those stripeys interested.

If you are wanting perch the turning circle below dulater on the forth/clyde canal is the place to go plenty of room for the back cast too d,ont be surprised if you hook an escapee bow from bantone dam, it ,s used to top up the canal from time to time....Also my stretch of canal behind banknock is also fav for the stripey critters along with jack pike. have cycled to kirky fae banknock in less than 40 mins
