Default Shakespeare Victory X

I am looking to buy an inexpensive yet decent rod to return to a little river trotting & stillwater float fishing for Roach, Rudd & Perch.

I am considering one of these 2 rods but would appreciate some opinions...

1. New JW Young Trotter (5 Piece)

2. Old Shakespeare Victory X Match with spliced & hollow tips

Does anybody know much about these 2 rods???

Hi

the JW youngs is heavy... the action is nicer on the 5 piece rather than the 3 piece...

i would suggest the drennan series 7 silverfish, if you shop around you can pick up a new one for around 70 quid... a different league...

I wouldn't use a spliced tip for trotting because you will end up bumping fish on the strike.

I have the youngs trotter 3 piece it is heavyish but its got a nice action and power in the middle and it certainly dont bump fish ive caught loads of small trout and grayling on it over last couple of years, so if you can put up with a little extra weight its a great rod picks line up off water very quick too.must admit drennans are good.

Appreciate the comments so far...

Yes I have heard a little about the Drennans but they are just a little out of my price range for now (Xmas almost here & Santa's wallet has been blown up!).

Out of curiosity...who knows anything about these Victory X rods??? I cannot find anything on them at all which I find unusual, yet they look like a nice rod too.

Super rod for the money in 13ft, 14ft, 15ft and 16ft............

eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

Drennan 7 Silverfish is a nice rod as suggested, also Drennan Matchpro Ultralight or even Drennan IM9 Classic or Finesse.

All depends on your budget though.

JW Youngs are cheap and chearful, will do job but they are well heavy.

Pirate, interesting to hear your thoughts on the Youngs rods as most people seem to sing their praises but I have wondered how they compared to some of the latest hi tech rods. Good to hear some alternative thoughts on them as I was beginning to come under the impression that they were really light rods with nice actions at a great price...almost went ahead & bought one but will just take a little more time now.

I like the classic looks of the Youngs rods & the 5 piece is an attractive option, but a heavy rod is a no no for me...I would sooner wait a bit longer to get back to some float fishing rather than spend money on a crappy rod.

Yes, Shakespeare seem to be close to everyones hearts & I must admist that although I do not use their stuff much anymore as Im usually flyfishing & love Guideline & Loop gear, I do have fond memories of using Shakespeare stuff when I was young.

Which is why I would be interested to hear from anyone with info on the old Victory X Match with spliced & hollow tip sections???
