Default centre pin main line ...

I was just wondering what folk were using as main line on there centre pins...

i have some srandard 4 lb mono on there at the moment... i usually use reflo powerline as a hooklength but it seemed a bit pointless to add a finer hooklength with a higher BS than the main line and weaken the mainline with more knots...

i i have bought some ultima flo cast floating mono mono in 4 lb thinking that it would be a good choice for trotting and easy to mend etc

now i am thinking that mabe a braid might be the best option, better strength to diameter, good connection to the hook, i would then connect the powerline with a small bearing swivel.. i know you can get floating braid...

thanks

Dont use anything else but Berkley fireline Crystal on all my pins and cant fault it, would even go as far to say it gets better with time, I use the 8lbs which has a diameter of 0.009", only use a very small amount of mono for my terminal tackle. Have tried all the mono lines and you couldn't pay me to switch back to any of them.

I use what George uses....cos he recommended it to me Actually pretty much all braid floats, unless you buy specific sinking braid, eg for feeder fishing. Even then, I used that once (Drennan Feeder Braid, 8lb) as an experiment before I'd got some Fireline crystal and weirdly it wasn't too bad because although it did start sinking after a while, it was very slow sinking and being thin and light still pulled up quite easy when striking. Made me think it could be handy for sunk line waggler fishing but thats another story....

Overall I like the Fireline but there are a couple of points I'm less keen on, namely its a bit on the stiff side and the strange whiteish colour, but it does dull down a bit after use. Even so, when it needs replacing (it should last for ages saying that) I might look at other braids. I use Spiderline Stealth on my leger gear but I think that could work well too on the 'pin.

Be interested to know how that Ultima floating mono performs as I might try than on my other pin for comparison. I also considered Powerline like you, I use it for hooklengths but it seemed a bit pointless using a hi tec mono on the spool, unless you took advantage of the power rating by matching the thickness to standard 4lb mono and getting the benefit from the increased b/s (similar principles to when considering braid)

...actually, just reading this about Ultra flo cast it seems it might not be great for winter/cold water?
http://www.tackledirect2u.co.uk/prod...ollow-Line.php

...also....swivel...I don't bother with one and have no problems. If using double maggot I use a wide gape hook pattern so it holds a double maggot without flaring them out too much into a "propeller" causing twist. My set up is light hooklink of Powerline to a rod length of heavier mono to the braid. The hooklink + mono rig carrying the float etc I make up on winders beforehand and then just grinner knot the braid to loop on end of mono rig, on the bank.

I also have the Berkley Crystal on my pin Martin, again thanks to Georges advice.
I have only one problem, i built a 15ft harrison rod last year for trotting and the crystal does not pass through the eyes as easily as i would like.
I fitted large minima guides on the rod to limit them freezing but it just seams to drag through them.

I have since coated the braid with Scilicon to see if that helps but i have still to try it out.

i've used braids on my pins for nearly 10 years now ,i do also use flo-cast sinse it came on the market ,i have used it in freezing cold without problems ,but i know some have had it split .all other times its a excellent trotting line

i too mostly use fireline crystal ,have since they first released it in britain ,i'd seen it on us centrepin sites and previously used Power Pro braid ,i've only ever brought one lot of each .both types have lasted really well ,i'm forever swapping it from one reel to another and do flip it each year ,old docterin waqs to only put 50m on but i've always prefered a little extra and split my 125m rolls in half the extra 10m or so gives you a little in reserve and allows for cut offs etc

i always fish with a hooklength with mine and if i gets snagged anf get broken its only seconds to change .i also on solid faced centrepins put just enough mono to cover the face once or twice to prevent the braid from slipping around on the spool .

as said once braid is tried and you get used to your rod doing all the shock absorbing ,you'll never go back ,the only time i use mono is if someware like the L.I.F or timsbury manor forbid braid .

Berkley Crystal puts a whole new dimension to trotting. Wonderful stuff.

furnature polish (mr sheen/pledge) might make a difference (does with mono) but i've always found braid to be noisy going through rod rings ,power pro more so as its a twisted braid ,fireline is normally quieter/not as rough ,the rod eyes do play a part in this ,especially single leg guides . you may never get rid of the grating .the polish will make the line float better if you had a braid that sinks a little .

On Georges recommendations, I too was about to get some Berkley Fireline Crystal, but when speaking to Grommit, he tells me they no longer stock it, and Berkley have replaced it with a better line.
It might have been the Nano you mention Martin, can't remember.
I think Jeffs idea of a lighter mono hook length, is spot on, I cast right into a tree on the far bank last time out, using 4lb mono right through, and lost the lot, float everything, so it's the way to go for me.

Quite honestly I have used Diawa sensor for many years cheap as chips tough and works superbly, it glides through the rings silently unlike braid which to me always feels horrible and unlike braid if you do get a bit of a birdsnest through over enthusiastic casting it is easy to get the tangles out
about £6 will buy you a big spool which will last for years I have tried all the various braids mentioned and have gone back to good old reliable mono.
