If you don't want/need the fake worm look you can just snip off a small piece of the band to hook after the worm, just to hold the real one on. I suppose if you wanted to trot a fake worm/bunch, you could just use an Apps Bloodworm pattern which would also be more mobile than a posties red rubber band - anyone tried that?

Hi Pirate,
Thanks for this tip.
We get a lot of junk mail so we also get our
fair share of rubber bands. Out trotting last week
I put a rubber band on the hook point after the worm
and cut it to 3 or 4 mm. It has certainly lowered the
mortality rate on my worm stock and does not appear
to put the fish off.
My survivor worms and I are truely grateful
Cheers
Bill

Hi PP

Great idea with the bands - any chance you could post up a photo just to show the band and worm toether in situ on the hook. Would just provide a clear understanding of how you attach them both , many thanks.

Am going to dead bait for Pike this weekend although the lake am fishing also has a good head of large Perch, plus there is a backwater with some big Chub, so depending on how things pan out I will more than likely be fishing the worm at some point and post a few pics when I get back.

I tend to stick a small piece on the hook after I have hooked on the worm but there is always the option of leaving the band longer.

The Pirate.

If using worms or other wriggly baits on a barbless hook, simply tie the hook on with a grinner knot and trim the waste end to about 3/16th of an inch long. Thread the hook inside the worm and make sure you pull the eye and the grinner knot inside the worm. The worm stays on as the short end of monofilament acts as a barb.
