Default Now that's what I call a good day!

Every year I arrange an end of season outing for some of the boys from my office for a day on a beat of the middle Kennet. There are usually anywhere between 8-12 of us depending on work committments.

This year 8 of us gathered, paid our money to the keeper and spread ourselves around the 14 miles of main river and carriers available to us. The river was perfect - just a hint of colour and plenty of flow after the recent rain.

I had one of my best ever days with a trotting rod. 8 chub totalling 24lb 12oz., smallest a shade over 2lb, the biggest 4lb 4oz. All on double red maggot. In addition there was another 10lb or so of roach and dace so all in all a real top drawer day and a superb end to the coarse fishing season for me.

One of the other chaps had a 3-8 perch and there were several other bags of chub. Everyone caught fish though the out of season trout made a bit of a nuisance of themselves at times. I was fortunate - I only caught two though one was a five pound plus classic Kennet greenback in super nick for March. He gave me a fabulous scrap on 3lb line. I may go looking for him one evening in late May when the mayfly duns are hatching off, and he may not get lucky twice!

One thing's for sure - it beat the hell out of sitting chained to a computer in the office!

I went for my last outing of the coarse season today. The river was perfect when I looked-in on Wednesday afternoon. Seeing as we have had little rain hopes were high. I get to the Tees this morning and find it running six feet of water and muddy as hell.

Rain in the penninies again. Damn this east-west weather split we have, it makes it so hard to predict conditions on the major eastwards flowing rivers at times.

While I was there I managed to measure the rate it was falling - over 6 inches an hour - should be fishing well tomorrow. Typical!!

My last session on my local small river was last saturday - managed a new chub P.B. for that river of 4lb 6oz, well chuffed!
