To keep it short basically:

An Avon is a traditional trotting float which is very sensitive in slow to medium paced rivers and was designed for traditional hook baits such as worm & maggot, it varies in size and shot patterns.

Loafers were designed for all types of current but very stable in fast paced currents & designed to carry heavier weight and also heavier baits such as meat, bread, pellets etc

I must admit for trotting with maggots and small worms in reasonable paced rivers I like wire stemmed sticks, quite big ones with a bit of a "shoulder" - not dissimilar in effect to small modern versions of Avon's. They carry a decent bulk, say 4-5BB ish, and are quite stable, with a bit of weight in the float itself and the shoulder helps them to not ride up too high when held back a bit in the current. Also they are quite durable and have a largish top which helps to see them at range. I use loafers in faster, shallower water with bigger baits like bread (actually that's where the name comes from bread/loaf)

The Drennan wire stem Avons are worth a look. I've got a couple of the 5BB ones and find them a good all-rounder.

Dave.

Who cares, Jeff's are cheaper, and I am just a poor pensioner with a zimmer frame that needs repair.
