Default Shotting pattern

Looking for a shotting pattern to fish a fast flowing river for grayling with an Avon type float. River about 6-10 feet deep and chucking through.

Personally I would go for a bulk shot (usually a string of BBs) about 18-24 inches from the hook and then 2 No.4 shot about 12 and 6 inches from the hook.

I find a string a BBs more stable than AAA or SSG shot ... no idea why but it seems to work.

Go for the biggest float you can get away with ... but do try lighter floats. You can find Avon-types up to 7AAA ... you should be able to hold back quite well with that.

If the river is fast-flowing and, as you say, chucking through (and presumably pretty coloured too) I must admit, whatever shotting pattern you plump for, I'd be inclined to have the bulk of it near the hook, just to get your bait down in the water before it's washed out the other end of your swim.
