Default Small rod rings

Because I'm getting on a bit and my eyesight isn't as good as it used to be I have problems threading the fine line through the very small rod rings on my 13ft Trotting rod. and its not made any easier when my fingers are frozen....

Is there anything I can use to make it easier.

Now with a fly line I don't have any problems......

Yes. Put a Newark legerpin or a needle weight on the line and use it like a needle to thread the line.

Struth richard, it looks like you've actually found a worthwhile use for those Newark leger pins! (apart from clearing the holes in bait box lids) Well done sir!

If all else fails, set the rod up at home the day before then break it down carp-style for transport. Admittedly its easier with 2 piece rods, but can still be done with 3 - you might even be able to leave two sections joined depending on your car.

Nick one of the wifes hair grips, thread the line through and trap it with fingers and thread that up the rings

I've got a piece of kit which looks like a small bobbin threader for fly tying without the handgrip it has a fluorescent tip and does the job well. You find them in coarse fishing shops.Mine was only £1 (I used to use a darning needle before that but it wasn't half as good).

Thanks Denosaur.

The last time I was out with the trotting outfit I was cursing the rod maker (John Wilson) for using very small rod rings. or is it me getting old....

I know wat you mean. Without my reading glassess my arms are too short to see the rings clearly and they appear so small that I can't see a hole!!

Definately age!!

Rod makers, bigger rings please...anyway, wouldn't bigger rings improve line flow for trotting or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Definitely, particularly in freezing conditions.

The smaller high stand-off rings are supposed to hold the line further away from the rod so it won't stick to it in the rain. If you have ever tried float fishing in the rain with a rod with low rings and gaps too big between them (eg cheap contintental telescopic rods) this happens and believe me its effin annoying! However, if your ring spacings are ok, you could always replace your rod rings with bigger ones and you shouldn't have too many problems - I made up an Avon style rod with such rings and used it for years for float fishing and it was fine.
