Exclamation Centrepin, 3lb line and Salmon !!!

Hi Guys

Popped down the River Carron last night with a cheapy 13ft match rod with sliding bands, the only rod ive got that can take the "huge" foot on my Adcock Stanton centrepin reel

Anyway the Pin was loaded with 3lb line, a wee trotting float a small string of string of shot size 16 barbless hook and two maggots.

Its the first time ive tried the Pin on the river carron and to be honest ive not used the pin alot so i need to hone my skills.

First run of the float resulted in a take and i lost a good trout ! Missed a few takes (probably minnows) before loosing a nice 10" brownie. Then caught 2 minnows

I was really practicing controlling the float and line as i probably spooked most of the fish in the run ..............

Decided to try a wee run further up that produced some nice browns to the dry fly last week..........first cast float made it 3ft before shooting down a cracking fight from a 10"-12" brownie which i released.

Starting to loose the light ..........last trott float went down , struck .........dam ! snagged ! reeled in decided just to pull/snap the line call it a night .............then ..................the bottom started to move very funny feeling......... then slow thumping which got more and more powerful ! Then i so it roll a Salmon i reckon 25"-30" Gulp 3lb line size 16 hook ........ it started taking line as it screamed off down stream. finally it just snapped me off

Great fun ! love it yes lost the fish but it came up and rolled three times got a good look at it and the power was amazing ! Best of all toally unexpected.

Ive never caught a Salmon and i dont target them, but i might after that

Might have to scale up my tackle

Sounds like a great session you had there.
You can land some very big fish on a pin and 3lb line when you hit them don’t try to stop it just let them go, as long as you can follow them and there not heading in too some distant snag. All should be Ok

I bet you cannot wait to get back out

Nice one Gary

Had a few from the Earn while fishing for grayling. Hooked one well into double figures and played it for 20 mins before it decided to head for Perth
Its amazing the pressure you can put on a match rod and a centre pin.

Most years while fishing for Grayling during the winter months I hook into something big and angry.
Probably the best fight I have had so far was a 7.5lber caught on the clyde
played it for 20 minutes came out the water 3 times and I was on 4lb line down to a 2.5lb hook length.
I find that you always need to be aware that its a distinct possibility of hooking a big fella when grayling fishing and as a previous post said just let them go, keep constant pressure with the match rod and they will tire eventually.

Albeit not on a centrepin but I did the same thing as an 11 year old kid on the river Eden in Carlisle, float fishing for Grayling/Dace in the first week of November. After a fight of about an hour I managed to land the fish, and ended up getting a *******ing from a club official for taking too long to land it, I thought an hour was good considering the 2lb B/S hooklink and size 18 hook.
