This has to be a golden opportunity for anyone who has ever sought tips on fishing techniques and tactics for large stillwaters.

I know for a fact that one of the ghillies involved has several coaching badges, you would pay through the nose to have a day normally. For anyone wishing to learn more this would be the ideal day.
Keep up the good work Chris.

Thumbs up Only 2 days to go

Great response again this year, about 100 people fishing and 29 teams from all over the UK. Southern water, Wales, Scotland, Northumbria.... All we need now is some of the fantastic fishing we have been seeing at Rutland over the last couple of weeks.

Estimate the event will raise between £15,000 and £16,000 for WaterAid.

awwaffic 2009 netted around £15,500 for WaterAid, bringing the total raised by the event to over £120,000.
The weather was perfect for the 8th awwaffic at Rutland yesterday. Around 100 anglers from all over the UK took to the water to fish and raise money for WaterAid. There were 50 novices on the water many of which were complete first timers. But with the help and committment of 24 of the Rutland Water Fly Fishers voluteers the rod average still came in an impressive 1.71 fish / rod. Yellow Stones and the dam / main basin fished well but other areas proved more difficult.

There are Photos on www.fishypics.co.uk together with a summary of the results.

Many many thanks to all who sponsored the event, entered teams and voluteered to help put on the day.

Full results will be published on www.awwaffic.org in the next couple of days.

Regards

Thats a brilliant result. A great way to introduce people to our sport and benefit WaterAid.

Well done.

Nicked wholesale from Cliff at fishypics (Fishypics : AWWAFFIC WaterAid 2010 - Rutland 10 September), this years report is as follows:

AWWAFFIC WaterAid 2010 - Rutland 10 September

Ninety six anglers representing twenty three teams took part in this years AWWAFFIC WaterAid Competition held at Rutland Water on Friday 10 September 2010. Rutland Water Fly Fishers Club provided many of the gillies and boatmen for the competition, offering top class local advice and casting tuition to the many novice anglers taking part. Unlike the gun or claxon start to many of the major competitions held at the venue, this one was far more relaxed. No sign of boats being backed out of the harbour at full revs or jossling for best position as they wait for the start. It was a pleasant change to watch them all depart for their days fishing in a far more “after you” orderly fashion. There were some early fish during the morning session, but as the breeze picked up in the afternoon the fish went on the feed. However, novice anglers and big waves do not make a great combination, so all attempts by the novices at fishing from the front of the boat were quickly curtailed. Ruddering, fixed oars, mousetrapping and ‘Irish Style’ out the back were the only sensible tactics for the beginners. The fish were in the top couple of feet and all that was needed was a floating or Midge Tip line and a Minkie, as top boatman Mick Brooksby soon discovered. “We found fish high in the water just off the Dam wall,” Mick explained. “It was pretty hairy at times especially turning into the wind to motor back to start a new drift. But the fish responded well to the Minkie’s and both my anglers had their eight fish by 2.30pm.” Last years winners Northumbrian Water made it two in a row taking the team title with 20 fish for 42lb 2oz with IWS Tipplers claiming second place with the help of Mick Brooksby’s anglers John McGuckin and Matt Pluke.

Results:
Individual - Experienced
1. Brian Lillie 8 fish for 16lb 12oz
2. Paul Harris 7 fish for 13lb 3oz
3. Scott Everett 5 fish for 10lb 11oz
Largest Fish: Paul Dimbleby brown trout 3lb 4oz

Individual - Novice
1. Peter Aspley 8 fish for 17lb 13oz
2. Dave Feasey 8 fish for 16lb 7oz
3=. Dan Blunt 8 fish for 14lb 14oz
3=. John McGuckin 8 fish for 14lb 14oz
Largest Fish: Greg Clare rainbow 4lb 15oz

TeamS
1. Northumbrian Water 20 fish for 42lb 2oz
2. IWS Tipplers 20 fish for 39lb 8oz
3. IWS Hookers 16 fish for 32lb 6oz
4. Projective 3 18 fish for 31lb 5oz
5. RSK Kingfishers 14 fish for 27lb 8oz

Top Boatman: Mick Brooksby 16 fish for 29lb 4oz
Smallest Fish: Ian Smith rainbow 1lb 6oz

Statistics:
Anglers: 96
Total Fish Caught: 206
Total Fish Weight: 394lb 7oz
Fish Average: 1lb 15oz
Rod Average: 2.15
Largest Fish 4lb 15oz

Rough figures from Chris suggest that £11,500+ was raised from the event, mostly from the loyal sponsors. Good result in these times.
