Had the pleasure of guiding for PaulB on the River Skell today. The River was running quite low and fish were well spread, and took some locating - we didn't find any shoals which is unusual for the Skell and many local 'hot spots' were void of fish. However, the general conditions were still quite favourable for us and i was confident that Paul would pop his grayling cherry.
As per normal i managed to get out of bed late and had to ram breakfast and coffee down the throat en route to meeting Paul. We had a quick intro. then set off on the lengthy 3 minute drive to the upper beat.
I set Paul up on a trio and prepared a French style leader for standby. Paul settled in very quickly and landed his first ever grayling within 15 minutes, quickly followed by a lively oos brown. Another one of each came to the net soon after before i received the call ! The missus had locked herself out !.... Paul fished on whilst i nipped home.
Although the first section had popped Paul's grayling cherry but we hadn't seen any of the big fish i know to locate the area.....
Our next little ( but with some depth ) run holds some good fish so in ya go Paul. Paul approached the run with stealth and searched out well - nothing, we adapted the rig slightly and Paul hooked into a good oos brown, landed and quickly returned. We rested the run whilst changing to the french style rig. No more fish.
We made our way out of the water flanking some troublesome dukes ( that's ducks ).... only to be met by a large unleashed rotty - nice !
Back in the water, a nice deeper hole with some shelter. We spotted a grayling, presented flies which were ignored - today wouldn't be easy however, Paul managed another grayling here along with another oos brown.
Our next spot was a ' one shot saloon' run, very shallow, narrow and exposed. Paul crept into position and presented the fly on the button, his reward the best grayling to press, a good strong clean fish which put a hefty bend in Paul's rod. Luckily, it didn't have the water to run. By far the best catch of the day for Paul, not his biggest fish of the day but given the angling situation a very well caught fish.
A quick move up to a junction pool were Paul took another oos brown with no grayling showing - again, unusual as this pool is generally productive. A drop back to a bridge pool were a passing old granny took a liking to Fred. I stood back chatting with the old dear and watched on whilst Paul landed more grayling - a nice one included.
We had a late dinner and relocated down stream. More hot spots were fruitless so we decided upon a cast and move tactic for the remainder of the day. Paul managed another good grayling, not a Skell monster but a good fish all the same.
The day ended with Paul landing 9 grayling and around 4/5 oob's. A good result for the low water and evasive fish behaviour and a very admiral result for a grayling newbie - well done Paul.
