Default Italian Casting Style Demonstrated at 2010 BFFI

Last month I was fortunate to attend a casting course organised by the Fly Fishing Masters Team in Italy.

This course was held on the rivers 100km north of Venice.

There is no formal casting qualifications in Italy (nor are there many guides) and FFM are endeavouring to teach people their style of casting which has been developed to fish small overgrown rivers.

FFM is a 'not for profit' organisation who also have a small magazine available on-line.

This year, Massimo Magliocco and a few of his team will be demonstrating their casting techniques at the BFFI. If you get a chance to watch, then I highly recommend that you try and get to see a demonstration. These guys can really place a fly in difficult conditions and catch fish. Some of the techniques I have mastered but some of the others it is back to basics for me.

They are also launching their English version of the casting tapes and magazine which some might find very interesting.

Next year they aim to run a couple of their courses over here so there will be an opportunity to try and master these 'fishermen' casts.

Yet, a few of the top Italian instructors are all FFF accredited casting instructors.

I would love to go but too far for me. Much of my fishing has challenging casting and it would be good to see how other people deal with the problems.

What do they do.
Cast over their shoulder while leaving the water.
Sure they are very good but I'll give it a miss.

Tight Lines
That's is a bit contrite.
Actually, they have 7 casting techniques which are designed to fish in very tight situations (small over grown streams).
Some of them we would consider straight forward when in fact they do have a degree of complexity to them. Others are definitely unique and difficult to master and use competently.
So until you see, why not reserve you judgement.
Typical of this forum.

The Italians favor ultra-fast rods and are masters at tip control. One of my fishing buddies, Marino, is a bamboo rod-maker and a founding member of the Italian Fly-fishing School. Guys, you should watch him at work on a brush-laden, tree-overgrown small stream, a true wizard -- it looks like as if the fly is radio-controlled. Here he is in a typical situation, which for him is a piece of cake:
