Default What is the ideal amount of practice

I normally fish at least once a month, depending on work. When I go fishing, I like to spend the first hour or so ironing out my casting faults, plus giving my lines a work out. Is this the right time to do it, when I'm fresh, and is an hour too short.

Best Regards

The way I was taught was "little and often" so with regards to casting practice I have been working on approximately 15mins 2-3 times per week.

With regards to where, I would say most definitely away from where you fish, again I go to my local football field for this.

Thanks Andy. Good thinking about staying away from the fishery. I just can't wait to start once the fish start moving.

Much appreciated

For me practice casting & fishing don't mix.I try to practice every day.I'm still learning the skill, art of fly casting. But from experience of other sports that require timing, coordination, muscle memory. Casting training for want of a better phrase, should be short about an hour or so. Having said that everyone learns/improves at a different rate. So whatever suits you I guess. For me I try to work on a certain aspect until I've cracked it. That could mean spending a week or 6 on practiceing the stop or power application.

No doubt some one will be along in a mo to tell you that. You don't need to practice, casting should be second nature etc etc. I'm just a dirty casting perv I'm afraid.

Someone, a Golfer I think, was once called lucky.

When asked what he thought about that he said:

"The more I practice, the luckier I get".

10 minutes a day would be enough, provided it was focused and not just waving the rod around doing the same old thing. Always practice with a purpose.

I found practising on the grass was great for keeping the concentration on just the casting rather than how I 'might' catch something

What do you put on the end of your flyline/leader when your practising in the park?

bobbind, bit of wool just.

practicing without a focus (sky casting) is ok for some things but limited, targets are a must as is knowing what you were doing wrong/putting right.

having someone to practice with is very effective, they can see the things you cant see and the mutual feedback is motivational.
