Default What sort of distance?

Hi, I know ther wont be a straight answer for this but what sort of distance's should I expect to cast after some practice. Last year a mate and I went to Rutland for a days tuition to learn the basics and since then I have been having the occasional practice in my garden and getting better. I know accuracy is as important and that is coming on well, having a few rope hoops at differnt distances and angles all over the garden has helped a great deal.

Really what I want to know is how far should I expect #5, #6, #7, #8 etc to go

If you can double haul and you know what you are doing then there is no reason why you should not be able to put out the full line with any of those weights......how far do you want them to go.............birdsnest

If you can get 25-30 yards with a team of flies in a real fishing situation you are doing pretty well.

Obviously you don't need to get that far, especially boat fishing, but off the bank on a big reservoir the greater range you have in your bag the better really, which is why I would normally use 8 weight lines for this.

It is a far better idea to have it land in a straight line at 20 yards than in a heap at 30 !

WF5 kit has , by definition less mass and more relative air resistance than WF8 kit .

I'd have thought 25 yds with the WF5 is eminently approachable without too much effort or technique .

Of course you could learn to cast with big shooting head outfits in the 9# - 15# categories and make serious distance - but at the cost of delicacy - the AFTM15# School operates on Farmoor 2 btw - I ain't joking - and some of them can exceed 50m down a goodish wind with fast sinking heads ! ( They do tend to wear a strap with a butt receiver cup on it just below the elbow to reduce wrist strain when playing this game ! )

Me , I learnt bank casting from the Ineffable Arthur - so I still do it with a DT5# or 6# ( for windy days ) and I can still do 30 yards with either - but it took a lot of practise to get that good ! I did however have the very best teacher !

From personal experience/personal observation most of our locals limit (themselves) at perhaps 50 to 70 feet with light rods. Can they cast further, Oh you betcha, but (as one fellow told me) 'presentation' beyond that range tends "to go to hell in a hand-basket" if the accuracy of the cast is paramount.

Screw it, i'm going to agree too

Tagnut - there is a straight answer and that is stop worrying about it unless you really want to take up the distance game. Measure in relative terms, so I used to cast Xm far but now I can cast Ym far. Don't worry about any absolutes

That is the best advice I have heard of in yonks!

I would also add that the fly should land with delicacy too.

For most of my reservoir floating line work I use a 6 weight outfit.

I don’t do much distance stuff these days
And when I did I was restricted to 5wt lines only
This is me casting a 5wt line 116 feet measured its a few years old so my style has probably changed
Line is a double taper full 90 feet.
I am shooting line into the back and forward casts until the point were your holding the backing knot, a long smooth haul and let it go.
YouTube- fly caster
But to be honest you don’t need casts like that for fishing to often and a good presentation cast will always catch more fish than blasting it out.
It’s really a sport in itself. I give it up after a bad case of tennis elbow

Hope you enjoy the clip. I have somemore somewere
