Default What cast is this?

I recently visited the river and had trout rising in front of me but not able to backcast..tree's etc..... I always use this type of cast... I started my cast 'downstream' and then 'lifted' my rod .. brought the line back creating a loop and basically role cast the line straight in front of me without the line going behind me..... I know I have seen it somewhere?.... is it called a snap cast?

This is it but with no 'flick' forward prior to loading the rod

Dear Martin ,

I suspect it's a version of a 'switch' ( or more accurately a spey - maybe )

No doubt but the present crop of casting gurus call it something else and will pretend as ever to have invented something new when they haven't !

Sounds a very logical solution anyway and I hope it caught you lots

Best wishes

Sounds like a roll cast to me or possibly a jump roll if you had the line out of the water when you raised the rod to form the loop..................birdsnest

Roll cast? no, dont think so... jump?... dunno what that is birdsnest? Let me try n explain a bit more.... I'm stood, say, facing 11 o' clock... I cast down to 9 o' clock... bring the line back and cast the line to 12 o' clock.. does that make sense?... it's just that a mate of mine (I do have a few) ask me what it was called?... I aint got a clue but have seen it somewhere on U Tube or similar?

A jump roll is a little like a normal roll but with a bit more zip. As you bring the line back from the fished out position you lift it off the water but before it extends you drop the last couple of yards on the water to anchor it so that you can load the rod. Then it is a matter of rolling it out. Have a look at Welcome To Border Game Angling - Fly Fishing, The River Eden, Guided Fishing, Carlisle, Cumbria, Gift Vouchers available. somewhere down the bottom of the page you will see a list of articles for the speycasts. The jump roll is described there (better than I just did I think).......................birdsnest

A jump roll is the same as a spey cast with out a change of direction, instructors usually teach this cast before a spey. Its a useful cast say you are facing downstream and you go to roll cast, its hard as the water is moving the line back towards you so you loose the 'D' loop. With a jump roll you basically lift the rod slightly and sweep it back so the anchor point is at the side of your shoulder if that makes sense. This way you still have a nice tight D loop giving more power so you can cast your line with less effort.

Regards
John.

Wink Easy.

In the 2 hander world it's called a "Snap T." The idea, as with the 'Snake Roll,' Circle, etc., is, save for a small "D" loop behind you all the line/leader stays out/on/over the water. Very easy (as are most spey casts) to do with a one hander rod.

(PS: I've also seen it called the 'Cut Cast' when used with single handers.)

Edit to add a bit of history to the cast. Fellows who 'developed' the cast (used very frequently here in the PNW) soon discovered that if you didn't keep your rod tip really high when bringing the rod tip around, and a low cut back under the moving fly line, the 'fly' could easily come (how shall we say?) "in contact" with the pointy end of the rod. The original cast was actually not called the Snap T, but the 'Snapped Tip.'

Captain,

If I've got what you're saying right, you swing the line around in front of your body then roll cast out straight ahead? If so, that's a single spey.

You say it's like the video but without the flick, if the snap isn't there i'm sure you're describing a single spey. Change of direction, ended with a roll cast all in one movement? Like this? YouTube- Single Spey Not the best video but it's what I mean all the same.

Next time video yourself and make it easy for us

Scotty, do a google of Snap T spey cast and I think (even if done with a two hander) how it works ... which, with very limited back space, 'a treat.'

Edit: here's a good clip showing many of the common spey casts done with a single hander rod. YouTube- Single-Handed Fly Rod Casting Using Spey Casting Techniques
Edit/Edit: Found it! Same guy, but this clip features the 'Snap T.' YouTube- Snap-t Casting for Wild Rainbow Trout
Adding this one, even if the Snap T's done with a two hander. Reason being you can really see the set up/formation/execution of the cast with the 'long rod.' YouTube- Snap T Cast
