Default casting/ shooting the whole line - any rod weight?

Hello gents -

Apologies if this has been asked before/ recently. (I did a cursory look through the first 2 pages).

I fished a 9ft 6 weight the other day. Its a Hardy Swift, an absolute cannon, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that my casting has come on to the point where I could relatively easily cast most of the line, and shoot what was left.

I'm pretty sure I cannot do this with my favourite SLT 4wt - (although it is a slower action).

That got me thinking. Setting aside questions about IF/WHY one would want to do so, is it possible to cast the whole line with any weight of rod? (I guess you'd have to have a reasonable length in all cases - no 6 footers).

Or is there a point/ weight where this becomes generally impossible?

Would a better caster than myself be able to cast the whole line with an 8ft 2 weight for instance?

Thoughts?

<M

If it is of any interest I once saw Tim Rajeff ( Steve's Brother ) cast 25 yards of a DT6 right through the Guide's Shack at Mike Cusack's Lodge at King Salmon in Alaska.

Not exceptional you might think , but as he was only holding a tip ring between the forefinger and thumb of his right hand ( no rod involved at all ) damned impressive and he won the bet easy !

I'd bet him and his brother could have done it - but exactly why , one would have to speculate about !

Ever helpful

try casting with the top half of your rod, dont be surprised (after you get the hang of it) if it goes further, its a good way to discover special powers.

Thanks for the replies thus far. So it would appear that I was incorrect in my assumption that rod length or line weight would be a limiting factor.

It seems I have much to work on. As I hinted in my first post, there are probably no actual fishing situations in which I would need to cast even 3/4 of the line with a 4 weight. But the challenge is there all the same!

Zoomer - I assume you mean trying to 'project' the cast through the top half when using the full rod?

just use the top 2 sections as the rod, your cadence will need to speed up.
