BFCC - Home Of Uk Fly Casting

Some great intructors turn up who will help with anything - not just distance.
The meetings are very informal and good fun. I'm hoping to arrange some fishing when I'm over that way.

The main snag is that it clashes with our brook season opening. If conditions are against fishing locally, I would like to go, thank you.

Anyway, back the the thread topic
What defines "a cast"?

I started off by saying
Quote:
In my own "style free" practice there are two things I check:
  • am I getting good turnover of my leader (for my practice I use saltwater leaders so I'm never attempting to dump slack near the "fly")
  • is my leader free of knots ... indicating my casts free of tailing loops
by my thinking if I'm making shapes with a line and achieving both, then I'm making a cast.
Today I would like to add a third factor
  • Tension: during the cast the line should be in tension

I'll soon be at Bill Gammels' 5 Essentials

You're welcome

Although, in my limited experience, if that tension is maintained, all the way to, and including final delivery, it will want to ping back. Surely the finale, must be free of anything, other than gravity, for a delicate landing?

Perhaps ' control of tension ' may be more apt. As demonstrated today, akin to control of wrist ?

Andrew, for me this is just too broad. If I attempt to put a fly in a certain spot but completely fek it up and stick it in a tree then this, to me, is still a cast - albeit a sh1te one . Moving the fly by utilising a fly rod could therefore be a definition.

good point actually, a definition should define the difference between a good cast and a sh1te one

Mike, we'll look at the Tuck Cast next week at the casting club

A fair point James: thank you

... which I back to where I started. If my leader lands straight (when I want it to), and has no wind knots in it ...

Where this started was me trying to give the guys at the casting club some measure of whether their own practice was of "good" quality, or whether they might be reinforcing "bad" habits

like James says you can have a perfect cast, straight leader, no wind knots, gracefully unrolling loop that lands in a tree

maybe you should change it to 'what defines a good cast' just.
