Default Re: Casting... Left or Right Handed?

Thanks for all the replies folks - really useful. I must admit, picking up a rod, I prefer it sitting in my left hand, so that's a start. However, I think the best advice is to get a lesson or two. I'll be off to Aylebury sometime this week to see what I can arrange.

Regards

Shaun

Shaun,

Again I am the same as you, i.e. left handed through one handed sports including fly casting and right handed for two handed sports.

Flycasting was very natural in the left hand, funnily enough I had to learn to fish with the right hand last year due to tennis elbow, and it does help to be able to fish with the option of both arms.

However it is always more comfortable to fish with the left hand.

So I would go left, I hope this helps,

Andy

Really interesting hearing about others experience.

I'm off to Los Roques next week and have for the last few weeks being practising my casting. I'm not that good and usually use a 3 wt on a small stream, so I thought it best to try to get used to my 8 wt and aheavy fly.

I'm comfortable holding a rod in my right hand, it feels natural, but I've never really got the timing right, or the tight loops. Certainly I struggle to double haul, or specifically forward haul, I do exactly the opposite: pull down at the wrong point etc.

last night I was trying out my new rod (8wt TFO BVK) and tried it in my left hand. Not natural feeling, but the haul was correct and timing better! When I did get it right (I only tried 10 or so...fading light) they were good.

I do think I'm going to spend the weekend perfecting the LH cast and try an switch.

I did start life left-handed but go switched as a child, I wonder if this has a bearing?
