Look up a local instructor.

You need to be shown on the river by someone, no books can teach the magic.

Once mastered, it is a thing of beauty.

David Bell is in Dumbartonshire:

David Bell AAPGAI fly fishing instructor fly casting tuition, lessons instruction

Well worth seeking an instructor.

Always best to start with a lesson I would agree. I didn't and learned the hard way carrying all the usual bad habits.

For talking sakes, I imagine spey casting, or any type of fly casting as being like firing a catapult. You need to 'load' the power up to fire the missile from the catapult.

In spey casting the rod is like the rubber band on the catapult, and the line outside the rod tip is the weighted missile. This is an uncomplicated basic analogy on spey casting, and there's lots of variables up for discussion that pickle my head.

Then it's all about positioning the line in the correct spot where the rod can pick up the correct weight of line and propel it out.

If you can cast a single handed fly rod then you already have the basic skills and knowledge of timing and loading the rod. You just transfer that loading the rod from the air to lifting it off the water.

Best advice is getting that lesson the others suggested. Go for it though, you will love it.

If you can roll cast you're already half way there.

Whole heartedly agree with the lesson first. I've taught a lot of folks how to cast with a 2-hander and the 'hardest' were folks who were 'self-taught.' Lots of 'bad habits' to break before they get into the grove.

As for watching same, casts, etc., hit U-Tube. Tons of vid-clips. For a DVD (there are quite a few that really are very good) hit the RIO web site and take a look at Simon G's 3 disk combo on the subject.

When I'm working with a Newbie I'll bring a minimum of 4 rods (12'6'' to 14') each with a different line combo (never a Skagit head or a sink tip), different rod actions and line weights from 6 to 8. "One size does not fit all."

'Student' will find one or two combo's that really fit and a joy to cast.

David Bell was in the glasgow angling centre when my dad bought my new rod and he recomended me a 12 foot shakespere expedition rod and he let me pick my own reel the two work fine together.

I am going to get some lessons with david bell soon.

+1 to Jim's comment. Even 8 time zones to the West, we know of him and his skill level, not just as a caster, but as an exceptional 'teacher.'

Good Choice!
