Default Instruction for an eight year old

Hi All,

I've bought my eight year old son all the gear for him to start fly fishing. I would really like him to start off his fishing life casting properly, with no bad habits that he would pick up if I taught him.

Does anyone know someone in Dumfries and Galloway who teaches casting? It can't be too expensive as I was made redundant recently and I couldn't sell a high cost for tutition to his mother

Many thanks,

John.

Give him another four years before you think about casting instruction

I did a search on the Game Angling Instructors Association site for Dumfriesshire and came up with Keith Snow ...

Annandale & Borders Fly Fishing School. Learn to Spey cast and fly fish in Scotland for salmon, trout, grayling and pike. AAPGAI qualified instructor River Annan Nith

A word of caution though. I am a junior school teacher and 8 years old is very young and physical maturity varies a great deal at that age. Fly casting can be very demanding, a 7ft, 4wt may well be a bit of a beast for an 8 year old and a 'lesson' might effectively only last 20 minutes.

Thanks for your reply bravo 75.

Should I teach him how to put a line out so that he can go fishing just now (he's absolutely desperate to go) and get him lessons when he's 12ish?

Will he not pick up my bad habits?

Regards,

John.

Thanks for taking the time to reply and put the links in. Appreciate it.

I'll email the people you have suggested and see what they say. They will know what's best for a youngster.

Thanks again,

John.

Hi Stevie,
Yes there is a Sue MacNiven quite close to us. I'd seen her name when I done a Google search, but I won't be able to sell the cost of instruction to my wife until I'm working again. I'll take the guys' advice above and teach him the basics until he's a bit older/money is a bit less of a problem and try Sue.

Appreciate you taking the time to reply,

John.
